Spider Web Appliqué Crochet Pattern

Halloween is almost here! This Spider Web appliqué is very easy to make. And you can use it in many ways. You can make a bunch of them and spread on your dinner table, they are small and would be perfect for scrapbooking and for the photo frame or, you can sew them on the kids clothes or blanket. Just use your imagination!

Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
DC – double crochet
DC2tog – double crochet 2 stitches together
EDC- extended double crochet
HDC – half double crochet
St – stitch
Sl St – slip stitch
Materials: Crochet cotton thread size #10 in white, crochet hook size 6/1.8 mm

Finished Size: Appliqués are about 2” in diameter.


Round Spider Web

Ch 5, join with Sl St to form a ring.Round 1. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), 15 DC into the ring, join into top of Ch 3 with Sl St. Total 16 DC.

Round 2. Ch 2, DC into the same St, Ch 3, *skip one St, DC2tog into next St, Ch 3* – repeat to the end of the Round, Sl St into top of Ch 2 in the beginning of the Round.

Round 3. Ch 2, DC into the same St, Picot, Ch 5, *DC2tog, Picot, Ch 5* –  repeat to the end of the Round, Sl St into top of Ch 2 in the beginning of the Round.

 

Fasten off and weave in the ends.


How to make Picot.

Ch 3, Sl St into the top of last St (see Instructions below).
When instructed to work into the top of a stitch, insert hook under two loops highlighted in green in direction of arrow.

Ch 5, join with Sl St to form a ring.Round 1. Ch 4, *DC into the ring, Ch 1* – repeat 7 times, **HDC, Ch 1** – repeat 4 times, join with Sl St into third Ch of Ch 4 in the beginning of the Round.

Round 2. Ch 6, DC into next St, Ch 3, *EDC into next St, Ch 3* – repeat 3 times, **DC into next St, Ch 3** – repeat 2 times, ***HDC into next St, Ch 2*** – repeat 4 times, HDC into next St, Ch 3,  join with Sl St into third Ch of Ch 6 in the beginning of the Round.

Round 3. Ch 7, DC into next St, Picot (see Instructions above), Ch 4, *EDC, Picot, Ch 4* – repeat 3 times, **DC, Picot, Ch 4** – repeat 2 times, **HDC, Picot, Ch 3** – repeat 5 times, join with Sl St into third Ch of Ch 7 in the beginning of the Round, Picot.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

How to make an Extended Double Crochet (EDC)
The extended double crochet stitch is a taller variation of standard double crochet.

1. Yarn over. Insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and draw the yarn through the stitch. There are now 3 loops on the hook.
2. Yarn over and draw the yarn through the first loop on the hook. There are now 3 loops on the hook.
3. Yarn over and draw the yarn through 2 loops on the hook. There are now 2 loops on the hook.
4. Yarn over and draw the yarn through the 2 remaining loops on the hook.

Spider Webs must be blocked and starched to achieve the desired effect.
Soak the appliqués with commercial starch or fabric stiffener. Gently squeeze out any excess liquid. Place them on the pinning board. For a pinning board you can use a cork board, a sheet of Styrofoam, or a piece of pressed cardboard. Cover it with plastic wrap. Using rustproof pins, pin each Picot to shape. Allow to dry completely before removing your appliqués.
