Crochet Heart Ladybug Appliqué

A beautiful Heart Ladybug for all Ladybug lovers! Easy to make and perfect for any embellishment!
You can experiment with different size yarn and hooks to make your Ladybug in different sizes. Also feel free to use different materials for the Ladybug spots.
Abbreviations:
– Ch – chain
– DC – double crochet
– HDC – half double crochet
– Rnd – round
– SC- single crochet
– SC2tog – two single crochet together
– Sl St – slip stitch
– St (Sts) – stitch (stitches)
– TR – treble crochet
I’ve made Ladybugs in two sizes – small and large.Small Ladybug

Finished Size: 2-1/2” (6.5 cm)

Crochet Heart Ladybug Appliqué
Materials:
– cotton light weight yarn Patons Grace  in red
– cotton crochet thread size 10 in black
– crochet hook D/3 – 3.25 mm
– crochet hook size 6/1.8 mm
– black beads of your choice  for Ladybug spots (I was using black 11/0 glass seed beads)
– buttons of your choice  for Ladybug spots
– beads of your choice for Ladybug eyes (I was using pearl beads 4 mm in silver)

Make a Large Heart for the Ladybug body.

Large Heart
With cotton light weight yarn Patons Grace  in red and crochet hook D/3 – 3.25 mm
Ch 4;
Rnd 1. make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1,  DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC, Ch 3, Sl St.
Rnd 2.  Ch 3, in top of first St of previous Row make HDC and DC, 3 TR in next St, 2 DC in next St, DC into each of next 3 Sts, HDC into next St, Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point), Ch 1, HDC in Ch-1, DC into each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 TR in next St, DC and HDC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Rnd 3. Ch 3, SC in top of first St of previous round, 2 SC in each of next 5 Sts, then SC in each of the next 6 Sts, Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point), Ch 1, SC in each of the next 6 Sts, 2 SC in each of next 5 Sts, SC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center, Ch 1.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Make a Medium Heart for the Ladybug head. You can make just a heart or you can make a Heart with Antennae.

Medium Heart
With cotton crochet thread size 10 in black and crochet hook size 6/1.8 mm
Ch 4;
Rnd 1. make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC, Ch 3, Sl St.
Rnd 2. Ch 3, SC into first St of previous Row, 2 SC into each of next 2 Sts, SC into each of next 4 Sts, Ch 1, DC into next St (Heart point), Ch 1, SC into each of next 4 Sts, 2 SC into each of next 2 Sts, SC into next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center, Ch 1.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Medium Heart with Antennae
To make Heart with Antennae, make Rnd 1 as instructed above for the Medium Heart, make Rnd 2 as follow:
Rnd 2. Ch 3, SC into next St; making first Antenna – Ch 7, working in the 2nd and 3rd Ch from the hook – SC2tog, Sl St into each of next 4 Ch – this completes the first Antenna; 2 SC into next St – twice, SC into each of next 4 Sts, Ch 1, DC into next St (Heart point), Ch 1, SC into each of next 4 Sts, 2 SC into next St – twice; making second Antenna – Ch 7, working in the 2nd and 3rd Ch from the hook – SC2tog, Sl St into each of next 4 Ch – this completes the second Antenna; SC into next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center, Ch 1.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.


Ladybug Spots

For Ladybug spots I’ve used tiny round buttons, mini buttons in a shape of a heart, beads and crocheted small black circles.

Small Circles
With cotton crochet thread size 10 in black and crochet hook size 6/1.8 mm make an adjustable ring.                             
Ch 2, 10 HDC into ring. Draw the loop closed. To make it easier to do, first untwist the tail. Then pull the tail to draw the loop closed tightly. Then pull the tail from back side to draw the loop closed tightly. Join with Sl St in top of Ch 2.
Fasten off and weave in one end. Leave the second end to be long enough to sew the circle on the Ladybug. Make as many circles as you would like. Sew them on the Ladybug.
Sew on beads for the eyes or you can embroider them instead.

Large Ladybug

Finished Size: 3-3/4” (9.5 cm)
Crochet Heart Ladybug Appliqué
Materials:
– cotton medium weight yarn Lily Sugar’n Cream in red
– crochet hook size G/6-4.25mm
– cotton crochet thread size 3 in black
– crochet hook size 1/2.75mm
– cotton crochet thread size 10 in black
– crochet hook size 8/1.5 mm
– beads or buttons of your choice  for Ladybug spots
– beads of your choice for Ladybug eyes (I was using pearl beads  4 mm in silver)

With cotton medium weight yarn Sugar’n Cream in red and hook size G/6-4.25mm make a Large Heart for the Ladybug Body (See Instruction above).

With cotton crochet thread size 3 in black and hook size 1/2.75mm make a Medium Heart with Antennae for the Head (See Instruction above).

For Large Ladybug spots I’ve used buttons and crocheted Small Hearts.

Small Heart
With cotton crochet thread size 10 in black and hook size crochet hook size 8/1.5 mm
Ch 4;
Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC, Ch 3, Sl St.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Make as many small hearts as you would like. Sew them on the Ladybug.

Sew on beads for the eyes or you can embroider them instead.
