Notes:
- this pattern works lengthwise;
- the foundation chain for this pattern consists of a multiple of 2, so you can make this scarf shorter or longer; just make sure that the starting Chain number is a multiple of 2;
- in HDC and SC Rows the turning chain DOESN’T count as a Stitch, the last Stitch of those Rows is worked into the last Stitch of the previous Row ignoring the turning chain.
Instructions:
With navy blue color and hook size J/10-6 mm, Ch 212.
Switch to hook size I/9-5.5 mm.
Row 1. Working into back ridge of Chain, HDC into 3rd Ch from hook, HDC in each Ch to end of Row. (210 Sts). Ch 2 and turn.
Row 2. BLO – HDC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 3. BLO – HDC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Switch to a grey color. See Instructions below how to change colors. Ch 1 and turn.
How to change to a new color
Work the final Stitch of the Row with the first color, but do not complete the Stitch. You will have 3 loops (HDC) or 2 loops (DC, SC) remain on the hook. Drop first color and draw through the loops on the hook new color and complete Stitch.
When changing colors, leave a 7” tails to be added later to a fringe.
Row 4. BLO – SC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Switch to blue color. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 5. BLO – HDC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 6. BLO – HDC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Switch to a grey color. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 7. BLO – SC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Switch to blue color. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 8. BLO – HDC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Switch to a grey color. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 9. BLO – SC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Switch to blue color. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 10 – 11. BLO – HDC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 12. BLO – HDC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Ch 3 (counts as first DC of next Row) and turn.
Row 13. BLO – skip first St, *2 DC in next St, skip next St* – repeat across to last St, DC in last St. Switch to a grey color. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 14. Skip first DC, SC in space before next DC, **Ch 2, skip next 2 DC, SC in space before next DC; repeat from ** to end of Row. Switch to blue color. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 15. Working under 2 loops, HDC into first St, 2 HDC into next Ch-2 space and into each Ch-2 space to the end of Row, HDC into last St of the Row. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 16. BLO – HDC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 17. BLO – HDC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Switch to a grey color. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 18. BLO – SC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Switch to blue color. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 19. BLO – HDC into first St and in each St to end of Row. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 20. BLO – HDC into first St and in each St to end of Row.
Fasten off, you don’t need to weave in the ends – leave them as parts of the fringe.
Make fringe:
- Cut yarn in 13” strands.
- Use two strands for each fringe with colors matching the colors of the scarf’s Rows; fold in half.
- Attach fringe to the last stitch of each Row – insert hook through the stitch, grab the middle of the folded two strands of yarn with the hook and draw the loop.
- Keeping the hook inserted through the loop, grab four loose ends of the fringe, draw them through the loop and tighten. If you are attaching fringe to the stitch with beginning tail – include this tail in fringe. While making a fringe, grab five loose ends (four ends of the fringe and one beginning tail) and draw them through the loop.
- Lay the scarf flat on a hard surface and trim the ends of the fringe so that they are even.

Dear Lucy,
I just love your creativity!!! I can’t thank you enough for making some of your patterns free!!! I’m unemployed at the moment, so money is very tight!! Thank goodness I have yarn saved up from years ago, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to crochet at all.
Thank you again. God Bless you
Patty

The yarn here does not look like a soft navy, as listed. It looks a bit like royal blue.

Yes, in the picture color looks much brighter. I am not a professional photographer, so I probably mixed up something with camera settings.
