Originally, this crochet rainbow snake was supposed to be not a snake at all. It was supposed to be a seat cushion. But after I made this snake, my son fell in love with this toy and asked me if he can keep it. And of course, I let him keep this fun rainbow Snake.
Later on, I crocheted another snake for my son and made the original snake into what was the purpose of this project – snake seat cushion. You can find out about this project in this post.

Great idea! Love this snake! Will save this pattern for later! Thank you so much!
Iris Blumenthal says
how do you keep the stuffing from poking through?
GoldenLucyCrafts says
I personally crochet more on the tight side. If you crochet too loosely, you need to use a smaller size hook.
Leslie says
I’m thinking a multicolored self striping yarn would really work great with this project!
Marielos says
Beautiful!! I’ll try to make it.
Just one thing: Rounds 15-16: 12 SC.
GoldenLucyCrafts says
Thank you so much for noticing that! I just corrected it!
Kay says
There are no directions for stuffing it! What do you use? On which rows do you stop crocheting and stuff it? Do you use anything else to give it weight? Otherwise, it’s very fluffy with no heft.
GoldenLucyCrafts says
For stuffing I used Poly-Fil, which typically is used for stuffed toys. I didn’t use anything else for weight. You need to stuff this Snake as you go, I mentioned this in the Notes before the Instructions. Thank you!
Jan says
For my two daughters I made temperature scarves. My 14 yr old great niece got one as well. My 3 yr old nephew is getting……..a temperature snake!! So cute! Working rounds isn’t my strength nor is stuffing but it is so flipping cute. No one will notice my mistakes. Great pattern writing!
GoldenLucyCrafts says
It’s the cutest idea – a temperature snake! I would love to see it! I am very happy to hear that you like my pattern. Thank you!
rita says
In the rounds that you do not increase… do you still slipstitch and chain 1 each round??
GoldenLucyCrafts says
Yes, work Ch 1 in the beginning of every round and join every round with Sl St in top of first SC. Thank you!
Rita says
Thank you for the quick response. Nice easy Pattern so far. Haven’t gotten to the head yet. I also put little Jingle Bells in the end of mine for a “Rattler”.
GoldenLucyCrafts says
I love your idea to use Jingle Bells for a Rattler! Pretty cool!
Amanda says
I absolutely love this pattern!! I plan on making several! I’ve started my first snake, and no matter how much stuffing I use, the snake stands straight up. Do you have any suggestions so it’s more flexible? I feel my tension is good, not too tight. It’s about 24” right now. Thanks!!
GoldenLucyCrafts says
I am not sure why your snake is so stiff. Maybe it is because of stuffing? What kind of stuffing you are using?
Amanda says
Thanks for the fast response! It seems to have corrected itself the longer the snake gets. I love it and can’t wait to surprise my son with it!
Sharon says
I need to buy stuffing and want to make sure I have enough. How much stuffing do you think you used for this? 16oz(1lb) bag of poly fill or 64oz(4lb) of poly fill?
Also my son is excited for me to finish this project it looks super cute and I also cannot wait! Although it is working up super fast so won’t be long now.
GoldenLucyCrafts says
I am happy to hear that you like making my snake! 16 oz bag will be enough. I just weighted my snake and it is about 13 oz including yarn.
Dani says
My daughter is obsessed with reptiles. She’s so excited I’m making this snake for her currently. I’m about 2 feet into now but it’s so stiff. Now matter how much/how little stuffing i use, it just doesn’t want to bend naturally. And when i manually bend it myself, it wrinkles up in the creases. Do you have any advice on how to make it more pliable or flexible??
GoldenLucyCrafts says
I am not sure why your snake is so stiff. What kind of yarn and stuffing you are using? Also, the longer the snake gets, the more flexible it will be.
cynthia gonzales says
just curious but what size safety eyes?
GoldenLucyCrafts says
For my snake, I used 8 mm safety eyes.
Suzanne says
I had a skein of lion brand “just my stripe” sitting next to me when I saw your snake pattern so my snake is gray at the tail then white now going into a lighter gray…….
I have 9 Grandson’s so I will be making lots of snakes! Thank you for the pattern! I love your snake!
GoldenLucyCrafts says
My son loves his snake, I am sure, your grandkids will love their snakes too! Thank you so much for your kind words!

Is there any way to remove social media sharing on side of page? It is in the way of reading instructions. I do not use or have accounts for facebook or twitter.
GoldenLucyCrafts says
Thank you for letting me know. I agree that those buttons were blocking the left side of the screen on mobile, so I removed them.
Sharron says
Many thanks. Looking forward to making this adorable snake.
Maya says
So clear instructions! Thank you so much for sharing!!
GoldenLucyCrafts says
You are very welcome! I am glad that you liked my snake!
Kathy says
This is such a cute pattern. Thanks for sharing. I am making one for my grandson. Will the snake coil on its own? Is there a certain amount of stuffing to use?
GoldenLucyCrafts says
Hello Kathy, I am glad to hear that you are making my snake. I hope your grandson will have a lot of fun with it! You will need 16oz(1lb) bag of poly fill for stuffing. And no, the snake will not coil on its own.
Lynn says
Thank you for sharing your pattern. I just finished making a snake tonight. Only about 5 feet long, but I wanted it to be done for my friend to give to her great grandson. I wasn’t able to go out to get the safety eyes so I just embroidered them on. I wanted to be sure it was safe for a 2yo. It’s so cute. I’m thinking I will make one for my granddaughter.
GoldenLucyCrafts says
You are very welcome! I am happy to hear that you like my snake pattern!

About how many grams of yarn did you use to make this? I’d like to make a long snake for my sister, but the nearest yarn shop is over 1hr drive away and I’d like to get the amount right the first time without dramatically overestimating.
GoldenLucyCrafts says
I used 7 different colors for my snake. The total weight of my snake including the stuffing is about 13oz. Hope this will help.
Haley Urbanek says
How many stitches apart are the eyes? I loved making this snake and was curious. 😀
GoldenLucyCrafts says
4 stitches apart.
Rebecca says
I love all of your posts in 2022. I’m looking forward to 2023!
GoldenLucyCrafts says
Thank you so much! I am happy to hear that!
Darlene says
How long is the head? If I want the snake to be 85 inches how long should I make the body before I start the head? Thank you for your reply.
GoldenLucyCrafts says
The head is about 4″ long. You will need to make a body 81″ long before starting the head.
Debbie Eckstein says
I am soooo excited to try this. i get how to change colours, but not sure how to fasten off that colour, before going into the next. For instance, when i change from blue to red, what happens to the red tale. how do i secure it before cutting it? I hope this makes sense. Thank you!
GoldenLucyCrafts says
After changing color, I crochet over the previous color yarn 6-7 stitches and then cut the yarn off leaving the tail about 1-2″ inside of the snake.
Debbie Eckstein says
Sorry. I meant to say BLUE tale. Not red tale. Thank you!
Ashley says
so with every round starting with chain 1 and ending with joining with a slip stitch in the top of the first single crochet, also with chain 1 not counting as a stitch, what happens with the chain 1s? this is my second crochet project so i am a little confused by that.
GoldenLucyCrafts says
You don’t need to do anything with ch 1. Ch 1 is used to beging a round to “lift” the work up to required hight. Different stitches requier a different number of chains. In our case, for single crochet, we make one chain that will raise our work up.
