Messy Bun Hat Made with Caron Cakes Yarn, Winter Hat

From my previous project (Scarf made with Caron Cakes Yarn) I had remaining about a ¾ skein of a Caron Cakes yarn in Lemon Lime color. So, I decided to make a Messy Bun Hat – a popular winter hat with a hole at a top for your bun or ponytail to go through.

Messy Bun Hat Made with Caron Cakes Yarn

It is too bad that my model doesn’t have a ponytail :).

I found a beautiful and easy to follow pattern on RepeatCrafterMe website. This pattern is made in two colors, but I wanted to use all three colors of my Caron Cakes yarn.

Caron Cakes yarn is good for big projects, like blankets, shawls, and so on. The transitions of colors are very long, so if you’re making small products like hats or scarves, you might not get all the colors from the skein.

To use all three colors and to be able to change them every row, I had to unwind my cake and made two separate balls of two different colors.

The remaining color on a skein was my third color. Separating colors is extra work, but if you want to use all three colors of Caron Cakes Yarn for such a small project as a hat – you, probably, don’t have any other choice.

For my messy bun hat, I was using a crochet hook H/8-5 mm. I had to add an extra round of V-stitches (Round 11) and two extra rounds of SC (single crochet) stitches (Rounds 18-19).
