This idea was brought to me by one of my customers from Australia. She wanted to decorate her Christmas tree with nautical themed ornaments as she lives next to the ocean and asked me to make for her sea motifs crochet appliques.

Using my own patterns, I made for her seashells, sea stars, jellyfish and some other sea appliques. I then starched them and attached string for hanging on the Christmas tree.
After she decorated her tree, she sent me a picture and her Christmas tree looked amazing! I thought that it was a wonderful idea to decorate a Christmas tree in such way. I decided to decorate our small artificial Christmas tree with sea motif ornaments made from crochet appliques.

For this project, I’ve made the following ornaments – Sea Shell, Sea Stars in three different sizes, Sea Horse, Jelly Fish, Anchor, and two different types of Fish. Patterns for these appliques are my own design and they are available in my Etsy store.
Materials:
For the ornaments, I used white crochet cotton threads size 10 and crochet hook 1.8 mm. For the embellishments, I used white pear beads size 4 mm and 6 mm.

Crochet appliques made from cotton threads need to be starched and blocked. For starching I was using Sta – Flo concentrated liquid starch.
Soak the appliques with Sta-Flo starch or you can use other fabric stiffeners. Gently squeeze out any excess liquid. Place the appliques on the pinning board.
For a pinning board you can use cork board, a sheet of Styrofoam, or a piece of pressed cardboard.
Cover your pinning board with plastic wrap. Using rustproof pins, pin appliques to a desired flat shape. For the Sea Stars – pin each point. Allow to completely dry before removing them.
To hang the ornaments, attach white or translucent thread to the top and tie a loop.
The patterns which I used to make these ornaments can be found in my Etsy store:
