You can use crochet hearts as appliques for different embellishments. Hearts will look great on hats, scarves, bags, blankets, etc. You can use them for scrapbooking and cardmaking as well.
If you like making greeting cards, on my website you can find more ideas for Valentine’s Day handmade cards embellished with crochet appliques and for Christmas cards.
I used these basic hearts in 3 sizes to make my heart animals appliques and many more heart-shaped appliques.

Instructions:
Small Heart
Ch 4;
Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under two loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in center. Fasten off.
Note:
Working in Ch-1 St. In this pattern, I prefer to work into chain, not in Ch-1 space. To work into chain, you simply treat the chain as a stitch and insert your hook under two top loops (that looks like a V). If you prefer, you can work in Ch-1 space.
Medium Heart
Ch 4;
Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Rnd 2. Ch 3, SC in first St, 2 SC in each of next 2 Sts, SC in each of next 3 Sts, SC in Ch-1 St (see Note), Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point), Ch 1, SC in Ch-1 St (see Note), SC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 SC in each of next 2 Sts, SC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center. Fasten off.
Large Heart

Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Rnd 2. Ch 3, HDC + DC in first St, 3 TR in next St, 2 DC in next St, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, HDC in Ch-1 St (see Note), Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point), Ch 1, HDC in Ch-1 St (see Note), HDC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 TR in next St, DC + HDC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.

I want to use this pattern to make butterfly wings appliqué, I want it larger. Do I just need to follow the last round until it is as large as I want it? Or should I go back to the next to last round.? I have looked at a bunch of you tube videos but I like your instructions much better.
GoldenLucyCrafts says
Yes, you can add a few more rounds (repeat last round), but I wouldn’t recommend adding too many as you have to work into the center of the heart and it will be bulky. I just tried to make a sample, I’ve added two rounds and it looks fine. Also, you can make your item larger without changing the design by using thicker yarn (or two strands) and a larger hook size.
Colleen B says
Slip stitch into where?
GoldenLucyCrafts says
Are you asking about first Rnd? You need to make all stitches of this Rnd (including Sl St at the end) into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made).
Carolyn says

Question please: In the Large heart: in Round 2 it says to HDC into Ch 1 stitch… however there is no ch 1 prior to that. Where do I HDC into a ch 1?
Thank you so much for your reply.
Suzanne
GoldenLucyCrafts says
Hi Suzanne, you need to work HDC into Ch 1 of the previous round. In round 1(it is previous round) you work: 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC, Ch 3, Sl St. You have Ch 1 before and after DC (heart point).

Bonjour would you give me permission to use your pattern to give away some hearts I would make, to « la Maison Adhémar Dion », a without fee centre (near Montréal, in Québec, Canada) where volontaries take wonderful care of sick people living their last days. My sister stayed there, 18 months ago, and I am so grateful for the way everyone treated her and our family.. I think your little hearts may be suspended wherever the personal would like to. I have to submit my project which dépends on your answer. Hoping to hear from you soon. Please excuse my english I am french and not used to write in your language . Thank you. Sincerely Hélène O.
