This cute crochet Sloth applique pattern is my latest heart-shaped design. As with my other appliques, this Sloth applique is made in the shape of a heart and it continues my series of crochet heart-shaped motifs.

Sloths are cute, lazy and the slowest mammals on Earth. Their normal face expression looks like a smile. Sloths are so popular as many people, who are tired of their fast, stressed lifestyles, admire these animals and their quiet slow life.
This Sloth crochet applique will be great for embellishment of children’s clothing or blanket items. You can also use it to embellish handmade cards.

DC – double crochet
HDC – half double crochet

Finished Size:
I made my Sloth appliques in two sizes.
Larger crochet heart Sloth applique is about 3″.
Smaller Sloth applique I made for Valentine’s card, it is about 1-3/4″.
Yarn:
You are welcome to experiment with different yarn weight to achieve different sizes of your applique.
The smaller version of Sloth was made using crochet thread size 3 to fit on Valentine’s Day card. The larger version is made with yarn weight #3. By the way, for my larger Sloth, I used the same yarn (Red Heart Soft, color -Toast) I used before to make my crochet Gingerbread Heart Ornaments!
For Larger Sloth applique:
Red Heart Super Saver, medium weight #4 yarn, color – Aran (A)
Red Heart Soft, medium weight #4 yarn, color – Toast (B)
Small amount black yarn or embroidery floss for the nose and smile
Crochet cotton thread size 10, color – Black
US size h/8 (5 mm) crochet hook
US size 6 (1.8 mm) crochet hook
For smaller Sloth applique:
Aunt Lydia’s crochet thread size 3, color – Natural
Aunt Lydia’s crochet thread size 3, color – Copper mist
Black embroidery floss (for the nose and mouth)

Instructions:
To make this crochet Sloth applique you need to make a large heart for the head, two eye patches and two eyes. Then you need to sew all the pieces together.
Head
With color A and crochet hook 5 mm, Ch 4.
Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC, Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Rnd 2. Ch 3, in first St of previous Row make HDC and DC, 3 DC in next St, 2 DC in next St, DC into each of next 3 Sts, DC into Ch-1 stitch, 3 DC in next St (Heart point), DC into Ch-1 stitch, DC into each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 DC in next St, DC and HDC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center. Fasten off.
Rnd 3. Join color B into the last Sl St of previous Rnd. Ch 3, SC in 1st St, Ch 3, Sl St in 2nd Ch from hook, SC in next Ch, Sl St in next St of previous Rnd, Ch 2, Sl St in 2nd Ch from hook, Sl St in next St of previous Rnd, 2 SC in each of next 3 Sts, SC in each of next 6 Sts, 3 SC in next St (Heart point), SC in each of next 6 St, 2 SC in each of next 5 Sts, SC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St into St where you joined color B. Fasten off.
Eye Patch – make 2
With color B and crochet hook 5 mm, Ch 4.
Rnd 1. SC in 2nd Ch from hook, SC in next, working under 2 loops – 6 HDC in last Ch, continue working on opposite side of Ch- SC in next 2 Chs, Sl St in next. Fasten off. Weave in one end, leave second end about 6-8“ long. We will use it later on for sewing the Eye on.
Eye – make 2
With black crochet cotton size 10 and hook size 6/1.8 mm, make Magic Ring.
Rnd 1. Ch 1, 9 SC in ring, join with Sl St to 1st SC. Fasten off. Weave in one end, leave second end about 6-8“ long. We will use it later for sewing the Eye on.
Finishing
Sew eye patches and eyes on (or attach googly eyes), embroider the nose and smile. Block your crochet Sloth applique as necessary.
For babies and small children items – use crocheted eyes or embroider the eyes on.
