Now that Halloween is past, many of us now begin thinking about the upcoming holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas.
These are special times for many families and are a perfect time for making the home cozy and decorative in the spirit of the holiday season.
Last year, I designed Christmas Hearts and made a bunch of them for our Christmas tree and for my son’s school teachers.
This year I decided to adapt the pattern for the Christmas hearts and to make crochet Gingerbread Heart ornaments.
Make sure to check out my other holiday heart patterns – Valentine’s Day Hearts and Halloween Hearts!
Gingerbread Hearts, or Lebkuchenherzen, are popular in German celebrations, especially during Christmas time.
They are typically decorated with intricate icing designs or have some saying in the center.
To make my crochet Gingerbread Hearts more realistic, I embroidered them to imitate the icing and embellished them with beads and small snowflake buttons and I am very happy with how they turned out!
This Gingerbread Heart is also part of my crochet Christmas ornament collection.

Thank you for this pattern! Happy holidays!
You are very welcome! Happy holidays to you too!
Hello, it’s a lovely pattern. Pls, it’s nit clear to me where to slip stich 3 chain when finishing the first row. I’ve tried different ways but it doesn’t look right.
You need to work Sl St into the same place as all other Sts of this round – fourth Ch from the hook (the first Ch made).
They are beautiful???
Thank you so much!
Thank you! These are so cute. <3
This was really quick to stitch up and the directions were easy to follow. Decorating it at the end took the most time though but they look absolutely adorable!
I am glad that you liked my gingerbread hearts!
I can’t figure out where to crochet the second row. After chaining 3, do I start in the chain or in the next stitch after the chain? Where am I supposed to crochet the second row? Can’t figure this out, pls help!
Second round – after Ch 3, you work in stitches of the previous round. You don’t work in the chain. So, chain 3, then work two stitches – HDC and DC in first stitch of round 1, then 3 TR in next stitch, and so on. Hope this will help.
I made these to hang on the outside of Christmas packages and they looked so festive!
