Crochet Heart Koala Applique

I designed this crochet Koala applique at my son’s request. He loves these cute animals and he wanted to have a Koala applique on his t-short. 

My crochet Koala applique is made in the shape of a heart as well as my other heart-shaped appliques. The Koala’s nose is made from a small black heart as well.

I have to say, use of hearts to make this cute applique is especially meaningful to me as I am very fond of these little animals.  Several years ago, we visited the San Diego Zoo, and one of my family’s favorite memories is watching Koalas resting in their eucalyptus trees.

Ch – chain

DC – double crochet

HDC – half double crochet

Rnd – round

SC – single crochet

Sl St – slip stitch

Finished Size:

This crochet Koala applique is about 3-1/2”  x  2″.

Premier Cotton Fair, weight # 3 yarn, silver

Premier Cotton Fair, weight # 3 yarn, slate grey

Aunt Lydia’s crochet cotton thread size 10, black

Hooks:

Crochet hook size 3.5 mm (E-4)

Crochet hook size 6/1.8 mm

Instructions:

To make this crochet Koala applique you need to make a large heart for the head, two ears, two eyes and a small heart for the nose. Then you need to sew all the pieces together.

Head

With light grey yarn and crochet hook 3.5 mm, Ch 4.

Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1,  DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Rnd 2.  Ch 3, HDC+DC in first St, 3 DC in next St, 2 DC in next St, DC in each of next 3 Sts, DC in Ch-1 stitch, 3 DC in next St (Heart point), DC in Ch-1 stitch, DC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 DC in next St, DC+HDC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Rnd 3. Ch 3, SC in first St, 2 SC in each of next 5 Sts, SC in next 6 Sts, 3 SC in next (Heart point), SC in next 6, 2 SC in each of next 5 Sts, SC in next, Ch 3, Sl St in center. Fasten off.

Right Ear

With dark grey yarn and hook 3. 5 mm, make magic ring.

Row 1. Ch 3 (doesn’t, count as a St), 9 DC into the ring. Fasten off. Do not turn.

Row 2. Join light grey yarn to the top of the first DC of Row 1. Ch 1 (doesn’t, count as a St), 2 SC in same St, *SC in next, 2 SC in next – repeat to the end of the Row. Fasten off.  Cut off the tail, leaving it about 6-8“ long. We will use it later on for sewing the Ear to the Head. Do not turn.

Row 3. Join dark grey yarn to 8^th St, *Ch 3, Sl St in next St – repeat 4 times. Fasten off.

Left Ear

Rows1 and 2 – follow the Instructions for the Right Ear.

Row 3. Join dark grey yarn to 2^nd St, *Ch 3, Sl St in next St – repeat 4 times. Fasten off.

Eyes – make 2

With crochet cotton size 10 and hook size 6/1.8 mm, make magic ring.

Rnd 1. Ch 1, 9 SC in ring,  join with Sl St to 1^st SC. Fasten off. Weave in one end, leave another end about 6-8“ long. We will use it later on for sewing the Eye to the Head.

Nose

With crochet cotton size 10 and hook size 6/1.8 mm, Ch 4.

Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1,  DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC, Ch 3, Sl St in center. Fasten off. Weave in one end, leave another end about 6-8“ long. We will use it later on for sewing the Nose to the Head.

Finishing

Sew Ears to the Head, Sew Eyes and Nose on. Using white yarn, make a couple of stitches for a spark. Embroider the smile with black embroidery floss. Block your crochet Koala applique as necessary.
