After publishing my crochet pattern for clouds and raindrops, my 8 year old son said that I have to design a pattern for a crochet Umbrella applique. “How can you have clouds and rain but no umbrella, Momma?”

This crochet Umbrella applique will look great on children’s clothing, purses, pillows or blankets. You can also embellish your umbrella applique with cute buttons.
The pattern for this crochet Umbrella applique is easy to make – you just need to crochet a semicircle and add a handle!

Ch – chain
DC – double crochet
Rnd – round
SC- single crochet
SC3tog – single crochet three stitches together
Sl St – slip stitch
St (Sts) – stitch (stitches)
Finished Size:
Crochet Umbrella applique is about 3-3/4″ tall.
Materials:
Patons Grace, light weight # 3 yarn (100% mercerized cotton), Color A for the Umbrella, Color B for the Edging, Color C for the Handle.

Instructions:
Umbrella
With color A, make a magic ring.
Row 1. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), 6 DC in ring, draw the loop closed. To make it easier to do, first untwist the tail. Then pull the tail to draw the loop closed tightly. 7 DC total. Turn.
Row 2. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), DC in first St, 2 DC in each of next 6 Sts (last 2 DC work into top of Ch 3 at beginning of previous row) – 14 DC total. Turn.
Row 3. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), DC in first St, **DC in next St, 2 DC in next St**, repeat from ** to ** to the end of row – 5 more times, DC into top of Ch 3 at beginning of previous row – 21 DC total. Turn.
Row 4. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), DC in first St, **DC in next 2 St, 2 DC in next St**, repeat from ** to ** to the end of row – 5 more times, DC in next St and into top of Ch 3 at beginning of previous row – 28 DC total.
Continue working along straight edge ( make 2 SC in each row-end DC) – Ch 1, make 8 SC in first 4 row-end Sts, 2 SC in magic ring, 8 SC in next 4 row-end Sts – 18 SC. Fasten off.
Edging
Join color B to the first St of the straight edge, Ch 4, Sl St in 3rd Ch from hook, *SC in each of four next, Ch 3, Sl St in 3rd Ch from hook*, repeat from * to* to the end, SC into last St – 5 picot. Fasten off.
Tip
Join color C to the top of the umbrella, Ch 4, Sl St in 2nd and in next, skip last, Sl St in same place where you joined. Fasten off.
Handle
Join color C to St behind the center picot, Ch 19, SC in 2nd, SC in next 3, SC3tog – 2 times, SC in next 8, Sl St into same place where you joined. Fasten off.
