This cute crochet Owl is another applique made in the shape of a heart and it continues my series of heart-shaped creations. This crochet Owl will be perfect for anybody who loves this wise bird!
“A wise old owl sat on an oak;
The more he saw the less he spoke;
The less he spoke the more he heard;
Why aren’t we like that wise old bird?”

This crochet Owl will beautifully embellish many different items. It would brighten many different clothing items and could also serve well in other applications such as scrapbooking or embellishing greeting cards.
If you enjoy making cards, some ideas for cards embellished with crochet appliques can be found HERE.
I made my crochet Owl applique in two ways. My first Owl has folded wings tucked in against his body.
My second Owl has its wings open as if preparing for flight. I extended one of them a bit more so that this owl is very happy to hold something interesting in this wing, like this Umbrella.

The Eyes
You have multiple options to make eyes for your Owl applique. You can embroider eyes, or you can crochet small black circles, you can also use buttons or googly eyes. (For babies and small children items – embroider the eyes on to avoid any safety concerns!)
The Ears
Make Ear the same way as you would make fringe for a scarf. Cut 3 pieces of yarn (use two colors) approximately 4” long and fold in a half.
Insert larger crochet hook from front to back through the 6th St of Rnd 4.
Grab the middle of the folded yarn strands with the hook and bring it through the stitch.
Keeping the hook inserted through the center of the folded yarn strands, grab the entire bunch of free ends, draw them through the loop and tighten.
Make the second Ear, placing it symmetrically on the other side of the Heart.
Trim the ends so they are even.
Finishing
Sew on large circles for the eye borders, embroider the beak. Block your applique as necessary. Sew on, embroider or attach eyes.
For the Owl with Umbrella, make crochet Umbrella applique.
For the Owl with Heart – make medium size Heart applique.
Here is the graduation owl.
