I designed this Christmas 2020 crochet ornament as a keepsake to remind us of this strange and crazy year of masks, social distancing, online learning, toilet paper shortages, zoom meetings and curbside pickup.
Update: Here is an updated version of this ornament for the 2021 – Christmas 2021 Crochet Ornament.

To make this ornament, we will need to crochet a heart, mask and toilet paper roll. The ruler is made from a craft stick. We then assemble all pieces together.
Heart
With Color A, Ch 4;
Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 4 HDC, DC (Heart point), 4 HDC, 3 DC, Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Rnd 2. Ch 3, HDC + DC in first St, 3 TR in next St, 2 DC in next St, HDC in each of next 4 Sts, HDC+DC+HDC in next St (Heart point), HDC in each of next 4 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 TR in next St, DC + HDC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Fasten off.
Rnd 4. Join Color B into last Sl St of previous Rnd, Ch 1, Sl St in 2nd Ch of Ch 3 at the beginning of previous Rnd, Ch 1, Sl St in next Ch, *Ch 1, Sl St in next St, repeat from * 8 times;
first arm – Ch 10, Sl St in 2nd Ch from the hook and in each next 8 Chs;
Sl St in next St of previous Rnd, *Ch 1, Sl St in next St, repeat from * 17 times;
second arm – Ch 10, Sl St in 2nd Ch from the hook and in each next 8 Chs;
*Sl St in next St, Ch 1, repeat from * 8 times, Sl St in 1st Ch of Ch 3 at the end of previous Rnd, Ch 1, Sl St in next Ch, Ch 1, Sl St into same place where you joined Color B.
Fasten off and weave in all ends except two in different colors to make a loop for hanging the heart on the Christmas tree.
Mask
With Color C, Ch 11;
Row 1. SC in 2nd Ch from the hook and in each of next 2 Chs, HDC in each of next 4 Chs, SC in each of next 3 Chs. Total – 10 Sts. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 2. SC in each of next 3 Sts, HDC in each of next 4 Sts, SC in each of next 3 Sts. Total – 10 Sts. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 3. SC in each St across. Total – 10 SC.
Ch 10 for the ear loop,
Row 4. Rotate your work clockwise, SC in next corner, (we are working now along long side of the mask on opposite side of the beginning chain) – SC in each St across. Total – 10 SC.
Ch 10 for the second ear loop, rotate your work clockwise and join with Sl St to the next corner. Fasten off.
Toilet paper roll
We will crochet a rectangular piece first and then roll it into the toilet paper roll.
With Color D, Ch 12;
Row 1. SC in 2nd Ch from the hook and in each of next 10 Chs. Total – 11 SC. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 2. SC in each St across. Total – 11 SC. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 3. SC in each St across. Total – 11 SC. Fasten off.
Assembly: to form a toilet paper roll, roll the crocheted rectangular lengthwise and sew to secure, leaving some “paper” hanging down.
Finishing
1.Make ruler – cut both ends off of the craft stick to make it about 3” (8 cm) long and using a ballpoint pen, draw lines for the ruler.
You can do this using a hobby knife and straight edge. I found that a sharp pair of scissors also works.
A fingernail file or sandpaper can be used to de-burr the edges to smooth them.
2. With black embroidery floss and embroidery needle, embroider “2020” on the mask.
3. Place the mask on the heart and sew it on to secure.
4. Attach googly eyes.
5. Wrap one arm around the toilet paper roll and sew it to secure.
6. Wrap the other arm around the ruler and glue it using a glue gun.
I hope you enjoyed this Christmas 2020 ornament free crochet pattern!
