I designed this cute crochet dog hat pattern after multiple requests about it. It is easy and fast to make and requires only a small amount of yarn. This makes it a perfect stash buster project for your four-legged friend.

This hat is designed for a golden retriever and should fit large dogs in the 55-70 pound range. The dog in the pictures is our adorable golden retriever Lucy who is about 62 pounds. By the way, Lucy is the inspiration for this website’s name.
If you are planning to crochet a hat for your dog, I hope she will not mind wearing it! I suspected that our Lucy would not like wearing the hat and it turned out to be very true.
After I made the hat, I wanted to take some pictures with Lucy wearing it. But it was almost impossible to make Lucy wear it. She immediately was doing her best to try taking it off.
As much as she likes to wear her crochet bandana and can wear her crochet headband for some period of time, we found that she can’t handle wearing the hat. Maybe your dog will not be so annoyed by it as my Lucy was.
So, anyway, with help of my son and a lot of dog treats, I was able to take some pictures of Lucy wearing my crocheted hats.
If you wish, you can embellish this dog hat with a crochet heart or flower. You can also make it in holiday colors and embellish it with Christmas, Halloween or St. Patrick’s Day appliques.

Will this pattern be drastically different with a 5mm hook rather than a 5.5mm?
GoldenLucyCrafts says
The finished result will be just slightly bigger.

Hey, thank you so much for this lovely tutorial!
I just wanted to know how to adjust this pattern if I want to use a 4 mm hook to make the same hat for a 3 year old European Retriver.
GoldenLucyCrafts says
Hi Mahima,
The hat consists of the band and the body of hat. You will need to crochet the band according to the circumference of your dog’s head. Then continue working on the body of the hat. Round 1 – work across the edge one SC per row. Round 2 – you will need to divide the total number of stitches into 4 parts: 2 smaller parts for the ear holes and 2 larger parts for the front and back. In my example I had 56 stitches. I divided them as follows: 16 sts- front, 12 sts – ear hole, 16 sts – back, 12 sts – ear hole. Make 2-4 rounds without decreases, then start decreasing.
