Easy crochet cowl pattern, super bulky crochet cowl, chunky cowl, neck warmer crochet pattern, free crochet pattern

This crochet cowl is a very easy and quick project! Using super bulky yarn and a big hook, it will take less than one hour to make it. And you will need just one skein of yarn!

For this crochet cowl, I used Back and Front Loop Half Double Crochet Stitch, which creates a nice textured look.

A large attractive button brings attention and a buttonhole isn’t necessary. Stitches are large so the button slips easily through them.

Gauge:

In pattern,

6 Sts x 5 Rows = 5” x 5”

Ch 7, work pattern through Row 5. The swatch should measure 5” x 5”, however, gauge is not critical.

Notes:

  • Starting chain for Back and Front Loop Half Double Crochet Stitch: multiple of 2 Sts + 1.
  • A buttonhole isn’t necessary as the stitches are so large that the button slips easily through them. This gives you the option to wear this crochet cowl in different ways.

Instructions:

Ch 31,

Row 1. HDC in 3rd Ch ( 2 skipped Chs count as first HDC), HDC into each Ch to end – 30 HDC. Turn.

Row 2. Ch 2 (count as first HDC), skip first St, *HDC into BLO of next St, HDC into FLO of next St, repeat from * to the end (work last HDC into top of Ch 2 at the beginning of previous Row) – 30 HDC. Turn.

Row 3 – 9. Repeat Row 2.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Securing the ends could be a little bit tricky as the yarn is very thick and the stitches are large. So, weave in the ends for a couple of inches in one direction and cut off the end.

Then, using a sewing needle and matching sewing thread, securely sew on the yarn end by making a thread wrap around the yarn end and crochet fabric. The thread stitches will not be visible as they will be buried in bulky yarn.

Finish:

Sew on the Button

To sew the large button on, thread yarn through the button from the front and tie a knot on the back of the button (this will prevent the button from being too tight against the crochet fabric). Attach the button to the cowl (find the thick part of HDC stitch).

Using a sewing needle and matching sewing thread, attach a smaller button to the back side to help stabilize the large button in the crochet fabric.

This crochet cowl will look differently depending on how you button it.
