Crochet Butterfly Applique

Crochet Butterfly applique is a very popular motif that can be used in so many different ways. I love to crochet butterflies and this applique is my third Butterfly design.

Ch – chain

DC – double crochet

HDC – half double crochet

Rnd – round

SC – single crochet

Sl St – slip stitch

St (Sts) – stitch (stitches)

Finished Size:

This crochet Butterfly applique is about 3” (7.5 cm) long.

Materials:

Patons Grace cotton yarn (100% mercerized cotton; 136 yds/124 m per 1.7 oz/50 g skein)

Crochet hook 1/2.75 mm

Beads, buttons

Embroidery floss – red and black

This crochet Butterfly applique consists of three parts: a small heart and a large heart for the wing, and head with the body.

Small Heart

Ch 10,

Rnd 1. Working under 2 loops: 3 TR in 5^th Ch, DC in each of next 2 Chs, HDC in next, SC in next, 5 SC in last.

Continue working on opposite side of Chain: SC in next, HDC in next, DC in each of next 2 Chs, 3 TR in last, Ch 4, Sl St in last. 

Fasten off.

Large Heart

Rnd 1. The same as Rnd 1 for Small Heart.

Rnd 2. Ch 4, 2 HDC in top of first St of previous Rnd, 2 HDC in each of next 2 Sts, SC in each of next 6 Sts, 3 SC in next St, SC in each of next 6 Sts, 2 HDC in each of next 3 Sts, Ch 4, Sl St in same St where you started Ch 4 at the beginning of this Rnd.

Fasten off.

Head and Body

Head:

Make an adjustable ring, Ch 3, 2 DC in ring,

First Antenna – *Ch 7, working in the 2^nd and 3^rd Ch from the hook – SC2tog, Sl St into each of next 4 Ch*;

DC in ring,

Second Antenna – repeat from * to *,

8 DC in ring, draw the loop closed. To make it easier to do, first untwist the tail. Then pull the tail to draw the loop tightly closed.

Join with Sl St into top of the Ch-3 at beginning of the Rnd.

Continue working on Body:

Ch 15,

Row 1. SC in 2^nd Ch from the hook and in next Ch, HDC in each of next 2 Chs, DC in each of next 6 Chs, HDC in each of next 2 Chs, SC in each of next 2 Chs, Sl St in next St of the Head, turn.

Row 2. Skip first St, SC in each of next 11 Sts, Sl St in each of next 2 Sts.

Fasten off.

Finishing:

Sew together hearts and body, embellish wings with buttons or beads, then embroider eye and smile.
