This graduation girl gnome crochet applique is about 4” tall

Yarn:
- Knit Picks Dishie medium weight #4 cotton yarn. Colors of choice: Color A for the cap and gown, Color B for the cap edge,Color C for the tassel,Color D for the nose
- Knit Picks Curio cotton thread #3 for the diploma, Color – white
- Aunt Lydia’s crochet cotton thread size #10. Color of choice: Color E for the hair; Color – red for the diploma string.
Hook and other materials:
- Crochet hook 7/4.5 mm
- Crochet hook 1/2.75 mm
- Crochet hook 6/1.8 mm
- Sewing needle
- Matching sewing threads

Instructions:
This graduation girl gnome applique consists of a graduation cap, gown, hair and nose that are crocheted separately and then sewn together.

Graduation Cap
Note: Ch 2 at the beginning doesn’t count as a St.
Top Part
With medium weight #4 cotton yarn Color A and crochet hook 7/4.5 mm, Ch 9;
Row 1. (RS) HDC in 3rd Ch from hook, 2 HDC in next, HDC in next 2, HDC2tog, HDC in next, turn. Total – 7 Sts.
Row 2. Ch 2, skip 1, HDC in next 4, 2 HDC in next, HDC in last, turn. Total – 7 Sts.
Row 3. Ch 2, HDC in 1st, 2 HDC in next, HDC in next 2, HDC2tog, HDC in last, turn. Total – 7 Sts.
Row 4. Ch 2, skip 1, HDC in next 4, 2 HDC in next, HDC in last. Total – 7 Sts. Fasten off.
Row 5. Edging. We will make edging along two sides of the cap.
With RS facing you, join Color B to last St of last row of the top part.
Ch 1, Sl St in same St, *Ch 1, Sl St in next St, repeat from * along the row to last (corner) St, [Ch 1, Sl St in corner St] twice, *Ch 1, Sl St in next St, repeat from * along second side of the cap. Fasten off.
Bottom Part
With medium weight #4 cotton yarn Color A and crochet hook 7/4.5 mm, Ch 9;
Row 1. SC in 2nd Ch from hook and in each next, turn. Total – 8 Sts.
Rows 2-3. SC in each St across, turn. Total – 8 Sts.
Row 4. SC in 1st St, 2 SC in next, SC in next 4, 2 SC in next St, SC in last St. Total – 10 Sts. Fasten off. Turn.
Row 5. Edging. Join Color B to last St of previous row, Ch 1, Sl St in same St, *Ch 1, Sl St in next St, repeat from * across. Fasten off.
Tassel
With medium weight #4 cotton yarn Color C, make a small tassel.
- Wrap thread around ruler (about 1” wide) approx. 5-6 times.
- Thread needle with yarn under wrapped threads in center and tie tightly.
- Flip ruler over, cut wrapped yarn through center.
- Make tassel top: cut a small piece of yarn and wrap tightly around tassel once, tie knot, hide ends inside tassel.
- Do not cut off ends from top.
- Trim tassel ends evenly.
Finishing the cap
Sew top part on the bottom part. Shape and block your applique. Attach tassel to the center of the cap and to the side.
Gown
Note: Ch 2 at the beginning doesn’t count as a St.
Row 1. With crochet hook 7/4.5 mm and Color A, Ch 4 (counts as Ch 1 + DC), 4 DC in 4th Ch from hook, turn. Total – 5 DC.
Row 2. Ch 2, HDC in each St across, turn. Total – 5 HDC.
Row 3. First arm – Ch 7, Sl St in 2nd Ch from hook and in each of next 5, 2 SC in first St of previous Row, SC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 SC in last St, turn. Total – 7 SC.
Row 4. Second arm – Ch 7, Sl St in 2nd Ch from hook and in each of next 5, SC in first St of previous Row and in each of next 2, 2 SC in next St, SC in each of next 3 Sts, turn. Total – 8 SC.
Row 5-6. Ch 2, HDC in first St and in each of next 7 Sts, turn. Total – 8 HDC.
Row 7. Ch 3, Sl St in 2nd Ch from hook, 2 HDC in first St, Sl St in next St, 2 HDC in each of next 2 Sts, Sl St in next St, 2 HDC in next St, HDC in next St, DC in last St, Ch 2, Sl St in 2nd Ch from hook, Sl St into side of last DC. Fasten off.
Nose
With crochet hook 7/4.5 mm and Color D, make magic ring,
Round 1. Ch 1, 6 SC in ring, join with Sl St to top of first SC. Fasten off.
Hair – make 4
With crochet hook 6/1.8 mm and cotton thread size #10, Ch 21,
Row 1. 4 SC in 2nd Ch and in each of next 9 Chs, SC in each of next 10 Chs. Fasten off.
Diploma
With crochet hook 1/2.75 mm and cotton thread size 3 in white, Ch 9,
Row 1. SC in 2 nd Ch from hook and in each Ch to the end. Total – 8 SC. Turn.
Rows 2-7. Ch 1, SC in each St across. Total – 8 SC. Turn.
Rows 8. Ch 1, SC in each St across. Total – 8 SC. Fasten off.
Roll square into a scroll, wrap a piece of red cotton thread size 10 around the center of the scroll, and tie it in a bow.
Finishing
Using a sewing needle and matching thread, sew cap, gown, hair, and nose together. Block applique. Sew the diploma onto the arm.
