Crochet Large 12” Heart Square Block

This crochet pattern is for a large heart square block measuring approximately 12” x 12”. It is perfect for making large items such as blankets, pillows, or cushions.

With Color A, make magic ring,

Round 1. Ch 3, make all of the next stitches into the ring – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in ring. Total – 13 Sts.

Round 2.  Ch 2, (HDC, DC) in first St, 3 DC in next St, 2 DC in next St, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, HDC in Ch-1 space, (HDC, DC, HDC) into the middle of the post of next St (heart point), skip Ch-1 space, HDC in each of next 4 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 DC in next St, (DC, HDC) into 1^st Ch of Ch 3 at the end of previous rnd, Ch 2, Sl St in last Sl St of previous rnd. Total – 25 Sts.

Round 3. Ch 2, HDC in first St, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in each of next 6 Sts, (HDC, DC, HDC) into the middle of the post of next St, skip next St, HDC in each of next 6 Sts, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in 1^st Ch of Ch 2 at the end of previous rnd, Ch 2, Sl St in last Sl St of previous rnd. Total – 37 Sts.

Round 4. Ch 1, SC in first St, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 HDC in each of next 4 Sts, HDC in each of next 10 Sts, (HDC, DC, HDC) into the middle of the post of next St, skip next St, HDC in each of next 10 Sts, 2 HDC in each of next 4 Sts, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, SC in 1^st Ch of Ch 2 at the end of previous rnd, Ch 1, Sl St in last Sl St of previous rnd. Cut off Color A and fasten off. Total – 47 Sts.

Round 5. Join Color B to 5^th St of previous round with standing SC, [Ch 3, skip 1 St, SC in next] 6 times,

[Ch 4, skip 1 St, SC in next] 3 times,

Ch 3, SC into the middle of the post of next St,

Ch 3, skip 1 St, SC in next,

[Ch 4, skip 1 St, SC in next] 3 times,

Round 6. Sl St in next Ch 3 sp, Ch 1, SC in same sp, Ch 4 , SC in next sp,

Ch 4, SC in next sp*, repeat from * to * 2 more times,

Round 7. Sl St in first and second Chs of next Ch 4, Ch 6 (counts as DC + Ch3),

2 DC in same sp,

3 HDC in next, 3 SC in each of next 3 sps, (DC, 2 EDC) in next,

(2 EDC, Ch 3, 2 EDC) in next Ch-4 corner sp,

(DC, 2 HDC) in next, 3 SC in each of next 3 sps, (2 HDC, DC) in next,

Round 9. Sl St in first and second Chs of next arch, Ch 6 (counts as DC + Ch3), 2 DC in same sp, DC in each of next 23 Sts, *(2 DC, Ch 3, 2 DC) in next corner sp, DC in each of next 23 Sts*, repeat from * around, DC in next sp before Ch 6, Sl St in 3^rd Ch of Ch 6 to join. Total – 108 DC, 4 Ch-3 corner sps. Cut off Color B and fasten off.

Round 10. Join Color A with standing DC in any Ch-3 sp, DC in same sp, Ch 3, 2 DC in same sp, DC in each of next 27 Sts, *(2 DC, Ch 3, 2 DC) in next corner sp, DC in each of next 27 Sts, repeat from * around, Sl St to first DC to join. Total – 124 DC and 4 Ch-3 corner sps. Cut off Color A and fasten off.

Round 11. Join Color B with standing DC in any Ch-3 sp, DC in same sp, Ch 3, 2 DC in same sp, DC in each of next 31 Sts, *(2 DC, Ch 3, 2 DC) in next corner sp, DC in each of next 31 Sts*, repeat from * around, Sl St to first DC to join. Total –140 DC, 4 Ch-3 corner sps. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Block the square.
