Snowman Applique
The snowman consists of a head with ear warmers, body, and scarf.
Head
Ch 2 at the beginning of the rounds counts as HDC.
With medium weight #4 yarn in Color B andcrochet hook 4.5 mm, make magic ring;
Round 1. Ch 2, 7 HDC in magic ring, Sl St to top of Ch 2 to join. Total – 8 HDC.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Ear warmers
Use crochet hook 1/2.75 mm. Join light weight # 3 yarn in Color A to any St of the head;
Ch 1, HDC in same St, Sl St in same, Ch 7 or 8 (the number of chain depends on tension and yarn), skip next 3 Sts of the head, Sl St in next, HDC in same, Ch 1, Sl St in same. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Body
Ch 2 at the beginning of the rounds counts as HDC.
With medium weight #4 yarn in Color B and crochet hook 4.5 mm, make magic ring;
Round 1. Ch 2, 7 HDC in magic ring, Sl St to top of Ch 2 to join. Total – 8 HDC.
Round 2. Ch 2, HDC in same place, 2 HDC in next St and in each St around, Sl St to top of Ch 2 to join. Total – 16 HDC. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Scarf
Use crochet hook 1/2.75 mm and light weight # 3 yarn in Color B.
Ch 15, SC in 2nd Ch from hook and in each Ch to the end. Fasten off. Make small fringes.
Finishing the snowman
Block the head and body as needed. Using lightweight #3 yarn in Color C, embroider the nose. Use black embroidery floss to embroider the eyes. Fold the scarf and block it. Do not sew all the parts together to create the entire snowman; we will sew the parts directly onto the top part of the pincushion.
Sewing snowman onto the top
With a sewing needle and matching sewing thread, sew part of the snowman onto the top part of the pincushion.
Using lightweight #3 yarn in Color D, embroider the arms.
Sew on snowflake button.
You can also add small snowflakes around the sides of the bottom part if you like.
Instead of sewing, you can use a hot glue gun to attach the snowman parts and snowflake buttons. If buttons have shanks, remove them using a craft cutter.
Assembling
1. Cut out of piece of the cardboard a circle slightly smaller than diameter of the bottom.
2. Put weighted material into a small ziploc bag.
3. Place a cardboard circle inside the pincushion, and then add weighted material. Add some poly-fil stuffing.
4. Use medium weight #4 yarn Color B and crochet hook 7/4.5 mm. With the side part of the pincushion facing you, hold the side and top parts together and single crochet around. Leave about 2” (5 cm) open, finish stuffing, and single crochet to close. Weave in the ends.
