Snowman in Ear Warmers Christmas Heart Ornament Crochet Pattern

Abbreviations:

Ch – chain

DC – double crochet

HDC – half double crochet

Heart is about 4.5″ (11 cm) without a hanging loop

Yarn: For the heart:

• Medium weight #4 yarn, two strands held together. I used Red Heart Super Saver, Color A – light periwinkle,
• Medium weight #4 yarn, one strand. I used Red Heart Super Saver, Color B – white

For the snowman:

• Medium weight #4 yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver, Color B – white
• Light-weight #3 yarn or thread size #3. I used Patons Grace light weight #3, 100% cotton yarn, Color A – snow, Color C – lotus, Color D – fiesta

Hooks and other materials:

• Crochet hook size J-10/6 mm
• Crochet hook size 7/4.5 mm
• Crochet hook size 1/2.75 mm
• Sewing needle
• Matching sewing thread
• Yarn needle
• Embroidery floss, color – black
• Embroidery needle
• Large snowflake button – 1
• Mini snowflakes buttons – 6

Instructions:

To make this ornament, we will need to crochet a heart for the base and a snowman applique.  Then we will sew the snowman onto the heart and embellish the heart with snowflake buttons.

Heart – base

With two strands of medium weight #4 yarn held together in Color A and crochet hook size J-10/6 mm, make magic ring;

Round 1. Ch 3, make all of the next stitches into the ring – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in ring.

Round 2.  Ch 3, (HDC, DC) in first St, 3 TR in next St, 2 DC in next St, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, HDC in Ch-1, (HDC, DC, HDC) in next St (Heart point), HDC in Ch-1, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 TR in next St, (DC, HDC) in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Round 3. Ch 3, HDC in first St, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in each of the next 6 Sts, (HDC, DC, HDC) in next St (Heart point), HDC in each of the next 6 Sts, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in next St, Ch 4, Sl St in center. Total – 37 Sts. Fasten off. Close and secure the magic ring. Weave in the ends.

Round 4 – decorative edge. Use one strand of medium weight #4 yarn in red color and crochet hook size J-10/6 mm. Join yarn into last Sl St of previous Rnd, leaving the tail about 7-8” (18-20 cm) long; Ch 1, Sl St in 2^nd Ch of Ch 3 at the beginning of previous Rnd, Ch 1, Sl St in next Ch, *Ch 1, Sl St in next St, repeat from * around to Ch 4 at the end of previous Rnd, Ch 1, Sl St in 1^st Ch, [Ch 1, Sl St in next Ch] twice, Ch 1, Sl St in same place as you join. Cut off the yarn, leaving 7-8” (18-20 cm) tail.  Fasten off.

Snowman

The snowman consists of a head with ear warmers, a body, and a scarf.

Head

With medium weight #4 yarn in Color B and crochet hook 4.5 mm, make magic ring;
Round 1. Ch 2, 7 HDC in magic ring, Sl St to top of Ch 2 to join. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Ear warmers

Use crochet hook 1/2.75 mm. Join light weight # 3 yarn in Color C to any St of the head;
Ch 1, HDC in same St, Sl St in same St, Ch 7, skip next 3 Sts of the head, Sl St in next St, HDC in same St, Ch 1, Sl St in same St. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Body

With medium weight #4 yarn in Color B and crochet hook 4.5 mm, make magic ring;
Round 1. Ch 2, 7 HDC in magic ring, Sl St to top of Ch 2 to join.
Round 2. Ch 2, HDC in same St, 2 HDC in next and in each St around, Sl St to top of Ch 2 to join. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Scarf

Use crochet hook 1/2.75 mm and light weight # 3 yarn in Color C. Ch 15, SC in 2^nd Ch from hook and in each Ch to the end. Fasten off. Make small fringes.

Arms

Use crochet hook 1/2.75 mm and light weight # 3 yarn in Color A.
First arm:  join yarn to any St of last Rnd of the Snowman’s Body. *Ch 7, Sl St in 2^nd Ch from hook and in next Ch. Fasten off and weave in the ends.*
Second arm: skip 3 St from the first arm, join Color A. Repeat from * to *.

Finishing the snowman

Block the head and body as needed. Fold the scarf and block it. 
Using lightweight #3 yarn in Color D, embroider the nose. 
Use black embroidery floss to embroider the eyes. 
Do not sew all the parts together to create the entire snowman; we will sew the parts directly onto the heart base. 

Finishing the ornament

1. With a sewing needle and matching sewing thread, sew part of the snowman onto the heart base.
2. Sew on snowflake buttons.
3.Make a hanging loop by using two white yarn ends.
