Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
DC – double crochet
HDC – half double crochet
SC – single crochet
Sl St – slip stitch

Finished size:
This crochet Santa cat is about 3-1/4” (8.2 cm)
Yarn:
Light-weight #3 yarn or thread size #3 (UK yarn type – DK or 4 ply), colors – black, red, white. I used Patons Grace light weight #3 yarn. Feel free to experiment with any yarn you prefer.
Hooks and other materials:
- Crochet hook size 1/2.75 mm
- Sewing needle
- Sewing thread
- Yarn needle
- Small snowflake craft buttons. Try to get flat back buttons. If you get shank buttons, you will need to remove the shanks.
- 6 mm googly eyes – 2
- Hot glue gun
- Craft cutter to remove the shanks

Instructions:
This cat applique consists of a head, body, hat and scarf. The tip of the hat is embellished with a small snowflake button.

Body
With black yarn, Ch 11;
Round 1. SC in 2nd Ch from hook and in each of next 4 Chs, HDC in each of next 2 Chs, DC in each of next 2 Chs, working under 2 loops – 8 DC in last Ch; continue on opposite side of the Chain: DC in each of next 2 Chs, HDC in each of next 2 Chs, SC in each of next 5 Chs, Ch 2, join with Sl St to first St of previous round.
Round 2. Sl St in each of next 3 Sts, SC in each of next 6 Sts, 2 SC in each of next 5 Sts, SC in next St,
Tail – Ch 11, SC in 2nd Ch from hook, SC in next Ch, 2 SC in each of next 2 Chs, SC in each of next 3 Chs, skip 1, SC in next Ch, skip last Ch, Sl St in same place where Ch 11 started,
SC in each of next 6 Sts, Sl St in each of next 4 Sts. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Head
With black yarn, make magic ring,
Round 1. Ch 2, 8 HDC in the ring, join with Sl St in top of first HDC.
Round 2. Ch 1, 2 SC in same St, 2 SC in each St around, join with Sl St in top of first SC.
Round 3. First ear: *Ch 3, Sl St in 2nd Ch from the hook, SC in next Ch, Sl St in next St of the Head*, Sl St in each of next 3 Sts, second ear: repeat from * to *. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Santa Hat
With white color, Ch 6;
Row 1. SC in 2nd Ch from hook, SC in each of next 4 Chs, change color to red. Turn.
Row 2. Ch 1, SC in each St across. Turn.
Row 3. Ch 5, Sl St in 2nd Ch from hook and in next Ch, SC in each of next 2 Chs, 2 DC in first St of previous row and in next St, HDC in each of next 2 Sts, Sl St in next St. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Scarf
With red color, Ch 15, SC in 2nd Ch from hook and in each Ch to the end. Fasten off. Make small fringes.
Finishing
Block the head, body, and hat as needed. Fold the scarf and block it as well.
If the snowflake button has a shank, remove it using a craft cutter. Then, using a hot glue gun, attach the snowflake button to the tip of the hat.
Sew the body and head together. Attach the googly eyes.
Finally, sew the hat and scarf on. Alternatively, you can use a hot glue gun.
