Crochet Reindeer Applique or Ornament

This crochet Reindeer is made from the heart and continues the series of my heart-shaped creations. This crochet Reindeer can be used as an applique or you can make a Reindeer ornament for your Christmas tree.

You can also use this crochet Reindeer to make a cute Christmas garland or to embellish handmade Christmas cards. 

You can experiment with different yarn weights and hooks to achieve a different look of your crochet Reindeer. As an example, I made Reindeer applique in two sizes.

Also, feel free to use different materials for the Reindeer nose. For my Reindeer’s nose, I used a small pom-pom; you can also crochet a small red circle or make the nose from felt.

DC – double crochet

HDC – half double crochet

Rnd – round

SC- single crochet

Sl St – slip stitch

St (Sts) – stitch (stitches)

TR – treble crochet

Finished size:

I made crochet Reindeer in two sizes:

Large Reindeer is about 3-3/4” (9 cm)

Small Reindeer is about 2” (5 cm)

Yarn and Hooks:

Large Reindeer

• Worsted medium weight #4 yarn
• Crochet hook 5 mm

Small Reindeer

• Aunt’s Lydia’s crochet cotton thread size 3
• Crochet hook size 1/2.75 mm

Other materials:

• Sticky-back googly eyes
• Glue gun

Rnd 2.  Ch 3, HDC+DC in first St, 3 TR in next St, 2 DC in next St, DC into each of next 3 Sts, HDC into Ch-1 stitch,  (DC+TR+DC) in next St (Heart point), HDC into Ch-1 stitch, DC into each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 TR in next St, DC+HDC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Rnd 3. Ch 3, SC in top of first St of previous round, SC in next St;  

First Antler – Ch 6, Sl St in 2^nd Ch from hook and in next 2 Chs, Ch 3, Sl St in 2^nd Ch and in next, Sl St in same Ch where Ch 3 started, Sl St in next 2 Chs, Sl St into same St, where the Antler begins;

2 SC in next St, SC in next St, 

First Ear – *Ch 6, SC in 2^nd Ch, HDC in next, DC in next 2, SC in next*,  

Sl St in same St, where the Ear begins, 2 SC in next 2 Sts, SC in next 6 Sts, (DC+TR+DC) in next St (Heart point), SC in next 6 Sts, 2 SC in next 2 Sts, Sl St in next St, 

Second Ear – repeat from * to *,

SC in same St where the Ear begins,  2 SC in next St, Sl St in next St,

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

If you have a small hole in the center, close it while fastening off the beginning end.

Finishing

Attach the eyes, glue or sew on the nose. If you are making an ornament, attach a string for hanging your Reindeer on the Christmas tree.
