There are many different varieties of the granny square. For this black cat square, you can use your favorite granny square pattern or use the same design that I did.
As we will have to sew crocheted elements onto the square, I prefer that the granny square design doesn’t have large holes.
I’ve made the eyes of my black cats in white color. If you wish, you can make them in yellow or green colors as well.

To make this Black Cat granny square, you need to crochet a granny square, two eyes, a nose, and then sew these face elements onto the square. You also will need to embroider the mouth and the whiskers.

Granny Square
With crochet hook 5 mm and black medium weight #4 yarn,
Ch 5, join with Sl St to form a ring.
Rnd 1. Ch 4 (counts as first DC and 1-Ch sp, now and throughout), [3 DC in ring, Ch 1] 3 times, 2 DC in ring, join with Sl St to 3rd Ch of Ch 4 in the beginning. Total – 12 DC and 4 Ch-1 sps.
Rnd 2. Sl St in next Ch, Ch 4, 2 DC in Ch-1 sp, DC in each of next 3 Sts, [(2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC) in next Ch-1 sp, DC in each of next 3 Sts] 3 times, DC in sp before Ch 4, join with Sl St to 3rd Ch of Ch 4. Total – 28 DC and 4 Ch-1 sps.
Rnd 3. Sl St in next Ch, Ch 4, 2 DC in Ch-1 sp, DC in each of next 7 Sts, [(2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC) in next Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 7 Sts] 3 times, DC in sp before Ch 4, join with Sl St to 3rd Ch of Ch 4. Total – 44 DC and 4 Ch-1 sps.

Nose

Eye (option 1) – make 2
With crochet hook 4.5 mm and white medium weight #4 yarn, Ch 8,
Row 1. Sl St in 2nd Ch, SC in next, DC in next, 2 DC in next, DC in next, SC in next, Sl St in next. Fasten off.
With black light weight #3 cotton yarn, make 2 long vertical stitches for the pupil.
Eye (option 2) – make 2
With crochet hook 4.5 mm and white medium weight #4 yarn, Ch 8,
Rnd 1. Sl St in 2nd Ch, SC in next, HDC in each of next 3, SC in next, Sl St in next, Ch 2, rotate your work and continue on the opposite side of chain: Sl St in first Ch, SC in next, HDC in each of next 3, SC in next, Sl St in last, Ch 2, Sl St in same last Ch. Fasten off.
Pupil – make 2
With crochet hook 1/2.75 mm and black light weight #3 cotton yarn, make magic ring,
Rnd 1. Ch 2, 10 HDC in ring, join with Sl St to top of Ch 2. Fasten off.
With white light weight #3 cotton yarn, make 2 stitches on the pupil for the spark. Sew on pupil onto the white part.
Finishing
Block the square.
Sew the eyes and a nose onto the square.
Using white light weight #3 cotton yarn, embroider the mouth and the whiskers.
