Christmas Black Cat Heart Ornament Crochet Pattern

This heart is about 4.5” (11 cm) without a hanging loop
Yarn: For the heart:
- Medium weight #4 yarn, two strands held together, color – white
- Medium weight #4 yarn, one strand, color – red
For the cat:
- Light-weight #3 yarn or thread size #3, colors – black, red, white. I used Patons Grace light weight #3, 100% cotton yarn.
Hooks and other materials:
- Crochet hook size J-10/6 mm
- Crochet hook size 1/2.75 mm
- Sewing needle
- Sewing thread
- Yarn needle
- Poinsettia flower decorative button – 1
- 6 mm white or light pink pearl bead – 1
- 6 mm googly eyes – 2
- Hot glue gun – optional

Instructions:
To make this ornament, we will need to crochet a heart for the base and a cat applique. Then, we will sew the cat applique onto the heart and embellish the heart with a decorative button.

Heart – base
With two strands of medium weight #4 yarn held together in white and crochet hook size J-10/6 mm, make magic ring;
Round 1. Ch 3, make all of the next stitches into the ring – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in ring. Tighten the ring.
Round 2. Ch 3, (HDC, DC) in first St, 3 TR in next St, 2 DC in next St, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, HDC in Ch-1, (HDC, DC, HDC) in next St (Heart point), HDC in Ch-1, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 TR in next St, (DC, HDC) in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Round 3. Ch 3, HDC in first St, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in each of the next 6 Sts, (HDC, DC, HDC) in next St (Heart point), HDC in each of the next 6 Sts, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in next St, Ch 4, Sl St in center.
Fasten off. Cut off the yarn, leaving long tail.
Round 4. Use one strand of medium weight #4 yarn in red color and crochet hook size J-10/6 mm.
Join yarn into last Sl St of previous Rnd, Ch 1, Sl St in 2nd Ch of Ch 3 at the beginning of previous Rnd, Ch 1, Sl St in next Ch, *Ch 1, Sl St in next St, repeat from * around to Ch 4 at the end of previous Rnd, Ch 1, Sl St in 1st Ch, [Ch 1, Sl St in next Ch] twice, Ch 1, Sl St into same place as you join. Cut off the yarn leaving long tail.
Fasten off. Weave in ends. Save two long tails of each color to make a hanging loop.
Cat
Cat applique consists of a head and body. We will also need to crochet a Santa hat and a scarf.
Body
With black color light-weight # 3 yarn and crochet hook 1/2.75 mm, Ch 11;
Round 1. SC in 2nd Ch from hook and in each of next 4 Chs, HDC in each of next 2 Chs, DC in each of next 2 Chs, working under 2 loops – 8 DC in last Ch; continue on opposite side of the Chain: DC in each of next 2 Chs, HDC in each of next 2 Chs, SC in each of next 5 Chs, Ch 2, join with Sl St to first St of previous round. Total – 26 Sts, one Ch-2 space.
Round 2. Sl St in each of next 3 Sts, SC in each of next 6 Sts, 2 SC in each of next 5 Sts, SC in next St, Tail – Ch 11, SC in 2nd Ch from hook, SC in next Ch, 2 SC in each of next 2 Chs, SC in each of next 3 Chs, skip 1, SC in next Ch, skip last Ch, Sl St in same place where Ch 11 started,
SC in each of next 6 Sts, Sl St in each of next 4 Sts. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Head
Make magic ring,
Round 1. Ch 2, 8 HDC in the ring, join with Sl St in top of first HDC.
Round 2. Ch 1, 2 SC in same St, 2 SC in each St around, join with Sl St in top of first SC.
Round 3. First Ear: *Ch 3, Sl St in 2nd Ch from the hook, SC in next Ch, Sl St in next St of the Head*, Sl St in each of next 3 Sts, Second Ear: repeat from * to *. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Santa Hat
With white color light-weight # 3 yarn and crochet hook 1/2.75 mm, Ch 6;
Row 1. SC in 2nd Ch from hook, SC in each of next 4 Chs, change color to red. Turn.
Row 2. Ch 1, SC in each St across. Turn.
Row 3. Ch 5, Sl St in 2nd Ch from hook and in next Ch, SC in each of next 2 Chs, 2 DC in first St of previous row and in next St, HDC in each of next 2 Sts, Sl St in next St. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Scarf
With red color light-weight # 3 yarn and crochet hook 1/2.75 mm,
Ch 15, SC in 2nd Ch from hook and in each Ch to the end. Fasten off. Make small fringes.
Finishing the cat
Block the head, body and hat as needed. Attach googly eyes. Fold the scarf and block it. Sew the bead to the tip of the hat.
Do not sew all the parts together to create the entire cat; we will sew the parts directly onto the heart.
Finishing the ornament
With a sewing needle and matching sewing thread, sew part of the cat onto the heart.
Alternatively, you can use a hot glue gun to attach the applique to the heart.
Sew the poinsettia button onto the heart. Make a hanging loop by using saved white and red yarn ends.
