As you may know, I grew up in Ukraine. My mom and both of my grandmothers knew how to crochet, knit, sew, and do embroidery. I was always surrounded by their handmade items.
My mother taught me how to knit and crochet when I was a young girl. Later I learned how to sew. Since then, knitting, crocheting, and sewing have been a part of my life. Doing so often gets me thinking about my mother and family.
Embroidery is a very big part of Ukrainian traditional folk art. It is used to decorate clothing and home items like towels, tablecloths, and beddings. And I designed this coaster to recreate in crochet one of the popular Ukrainian embroidery motifs.
Colors in Ukrainian folk art are very symbolic and always have some deep meaning. I made my coaster using two very traditional and powerful colors – red as a symbol of love and black as a symbol of grief.
This Ukrainian coaster pattern has been published in Pattern Pack Pro February 2022 and the issue theme is Cultural Crochet.
The issue is all about cultural heritage and you will learn about the cultural backgrounds of the designers who created for that issue.
