Yarn: For the heart:

• Medium weight #4 yarn, two strands held together, color – grey
• Medium weight #4 yarn, one strand, color – white

For the ghost:

For the flower:

• Crochet thread size 10, color – orange

Instructions:

To make this crochet ghost ornament, we will need to crochet a heart for the base and a ghost applique.  Then, we will sew the ghost onto the heart and embellish the heart with decorative buttons.

Heart – base

With two strands of medium weight #4 yarn held together in grey and crochet hook size J-10/6 mm, make magic ring;

Round 1. Ch 3, make all of the next stitches into the ring – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in ring.

Round 2.  Ch 3, (HDC, DC) in first St, 3 TR in next St, 2 DC in next St, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, HDC in Ch-1, (HDC, DC, HDC) in next St (Heart point), HDC in Ch-1, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 TR in next St, (DC, HDC) in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Round 3. Ch 3, HDC in first St, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in each of the next 6 Sts, (HDC, DC, HDC) in next St (Heart point), HDC in each of the next 6 Sts, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in next St, Ch 4, Sl St in center. Fasten off. Secure the magic ring and weave in the ends.

Round 4 – decorative edge. Use one strand of medium weight #4 yarn in white color and crochet hook size J-10/6 mm. Join yarn into last Sl St of previous Rnd, leaving the tail about 7-8” long;
Ch 1, Sl St in 2^nd Ch of Ch 3 at the beginning of previous Rnd, Ch 1, Sl St in next Ch, *Ch 1, Sl St in next St, repeat from * around to Ch 4 at the end of previous Rnd, Ch 1, Sl St in 1^st Ch, [Ch 1, Sl St in next Ch] twice, Ch 1, Sl St into same place where you joined. Cut off the yarn, leaving 7-8” tail.  Fasten off.

Ghost

With medium weight #4 yarn inwhite and crochet hook size E-4/3.5 mm, Ch 9;

Row 1. SC in 2^nd Ch from hook and in each of next 7 Chs. Total – 8 SC. Turn.

Row 2. Ch 1, SC in first St and in each of next 6 Sts, 3 SC in next St, continue working around – 2 SC in next St, SC in each of next 7 Sts. Total – 19 SC. Turn.

Row 3. Ch 1, SC in first St and in each of next 6 Sts, [2 SC in next St, SC in next St] twice, 2 SC in next St, SC in each of next 7 Sts. Total – 22 SC. Turn.

Row 4. Ch 3, Sl St in 2^nd Ch from hook, SC in next Ch, HDC in each of next 2 Sts, SC in each of next 4 Sts,

first arm – Ch 5, Sl St in 2^nd Ch from hook and in each of next 3 Chs,

SC in each of next 2 Sts, 2 HDC in next St, HDC in each of next 2 Sts, 2 HDC in next St, HDC in next St, SC in each of next 2 Sts,

second arm – Ch 5, Sl St in 2^nd Ch from hook and in each of next 3 Chs,

SC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in each of next 2 Sts, Ch 3, Sl St in 2^nd Ch from hook, SC in next Ch, continue working across the bottom (you will be working into row-end Sts) – SC in next St, Sl St in next St, [HDC in each of next 2 Sts, Sl St in next St] twice. Fasten off.

Small Flower

With crochet thread size 10 and crochet hook size 8/1.5 mm, make a magic ring,

Round 1. [Ch 3, DC2tog in ring, Ch 3, Sl St in ring] 5 times. Fasten off. Close the ring and secure it.

Finishing the ghost

Attach the googly eyes, sew on flower, and embroider the mouth.

Finishing the ornament

Using a sewing needle and matching thread, sew the ghost onto the heart base. If the decorative buttons have shanks, remove the shanks using a wire cutter. Then, with a hot glue gun, attach buttons to the heart.

Make a hanging loop by using two white yarn ends. Please note that the ghost applique may add weight to the section of the heart where it attaches. To balance the weight, you may need to position the hanging loop slightly off-center.
