Crochet Cherry Square Block: Free Pattern

Standing SC

1. Make a slip knot.
2. Holding loop on hook, insert hook in specified stitch (space).
3. YO and pull up a loop.
4. YO and draw through 2 loops on hook.

Instructions:

For this project, we will crochet a square block and three cherries with double leaves. Then, we will sew the cherry appliqué onto the square.

Square block

With Color A andJ/10 (6 mm) crochet hook, Ch 5, join with Sl St to form a ring.

Round 1. Ch 5 (counts as first DC and Ch-2 sp, now and throughout), [3 DC in ring, Ch 2] 3 times, 2 DC in ring, join with Sl St to 3^rd Ch of Ch 5 in the beginning. Total – 12 DC and 4 Ch-2 sps.

Round 2. Sl St in first Ch of Ch 2, Ch 5, 2 DC in Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 3 Sts, [(2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in next Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 3 Sts] 3 times, DC in sp before Ch 5,  join with Sl St to 3^rd Ch of Ch 5. Total – 28 DC and 4 Ch-2 sps.

Round 3. Sl St in first Ch of Ch 2, Ch 5, 2 DC in Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 7 Sts, [(2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in next Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 7 Sts] 3 times, DC in sp before Ch 5,  join with Sl St to 3^rd Ch of Ch 5. Total – 44 DC and 4 Ch-2 sps.

Round 4. Sl St in first Ch of Ch 2, Ch 5, 2 DC in Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 11 Sts, [(2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in next Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 11 Sts] 3 times, DC in sp before Ch 5,  join with Sl St to 3^rd Ch of Ch 5. Total – 60 DC and 4 Ch-2 sps.

Round 5. Sl St in first Ch of Ch 2, Ch 5, 2 DC in Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 15 Sts, [(2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in next Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 15 Sts] 3 times, DC in sp before Ch 5, join with Sl St to 3^rd Ch of Ch 5. Total – 76 DC and 4 Ch-2 sps.

Round 6. Sl St in first Ch of Ch 2, Ch 5, 2 DC in Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 19 Sts, [(2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in next Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 19 Sts] 3 times, DC in sp before Ch 5, join with Sl St to 3^rd Ch of Ch 5 in the beginning – 92 DC and 4 Ch-2 sps.

Round 7. Sl St in first Ch of Ch 2, Ch 5, 2 DC in Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 23 Sts, [(2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in next Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 23 Sts] 3 times, DC in sp before Ch 5, join with Sl St to 3^rd Ch of Ch 5 in the beginning – 108 DC and 4 Ch-2 sps. Fasten off.

Round 8. Join Color B with standing SC in any Ch-2 sp, Ch 2, SC in same sp, SC in each of next 27 Sts, [(SC, Ch 2, SC) in next corner sp, SC in each each of next 27 Sts] 3 times, join with Sl St to first SC. Total – 116 SC and 4 Ch-2 sps. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Round 9. Join Color A with standing DC in any Ch-2 sp, (DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in same sp, DC in each of next 29 Sts, [(2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in Ch-2 sp, DC in each of next 29 Sts] 3 times, join with Sl St to first DC. Total – 132 DC and 4 Ch-2 sps. Cut yarn and fasten off. Weave in the ends.

Cherry – make 3

With Color B and 7 (4.5 mm) crochet hook, make magic ring;
Round 1. Ch 2 (doesn’t count as a St), 9 HDC in ring. Draw the loop closed. To make it easier to do, first untwist the tail. Then pull the tail to draw the loop tightly closed. Join with Sl St in top of first HDC. Total – 9 HDC.

Round 2. Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a St), 2 SC in same St and in each St around, join with Sl St in top of first SC. Total – 18 SC. Fasten off.

Stems

Using Color C and 7 (4.5 mm) crochet hook, Ch 12, Sl St to the center of double leaf, Ch 12. Fasten off. This will create two stems.
For the third stem, Ch 12, Sl St to the center of double leaf. Fasten off.
Trim the ends, leaving them approximately 0.25” (0.6 cm) long.

Finishing

Block the square. Block cherries and leaves as necessary. Sew the cherry applique onto the square. Using Color A yarn, embroider sparkles on the cherries.
