
This crochet blanket square block pattern is another design I created for the Moogly Crochet Along. This square is also perfect for making a pillow, cushion, or bag. The pattern begins at the center and is worked in rounds. For my sample, I used a combination of green and orange, inspired by the beautiful daylily flowers.

I’m thrilled to be designing for the Moogly Crochet Along again! The annual Moogly CAL is hosted by Tamara Kelly on her blog. This event lasts a year and features 24 squares, each created by a different crochet designer. This is square number 17.

BL (BLO) – back loop (back loop only)
Ch – chain

Notes:
- Crochet over your yarn ends – by crocheting over them as you go, you’ll reduce the number of ends to weave in.
- Beginning Ch 1 does not counts as a St.
- Beginning Ch 3 counts as first DC.
Special Stitches:
EDC – extended double crochet
- YO, insert the hook in specified stitch, yarn over, and draw the yarn through the stitch. There are now 3 loops on the hook.
- YO and draw the yarn through the first loop on hook. There are now 3 loops on hook.
- YO and draw the yarn through 2 loops on hook. There are now 2 loops on hook.
- YO and draw the yarn through 2 remaining loops on hook.

Standing DC
- Make a slip knot.
- YO, holding loop on hook, insert hook in specified stitch (space).
- YO and pull up a loop (you have 3 loops on hook).
- [YO and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice.

- Holding loop on hook, insert hook in specified stitch (space).

With Color A, make magic ring,
Round 1. Ch 1, 8 SC in ring, join with Sl St to top of first SC. Total – 8 SC.
Round 2. Ch 1, 2 SC in each St around, join with Sl St to top of first SC. Total – 16 SC.
Round 3. *Ch 3, DC2tog in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in next St, repeat from * around, last repeat – end with Sl St in same place where first Ch 3 started. Total –8 petals.Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 4. Join Color B with standing SC in any DC2tog at the top of the petal, EDC in next Sl St between petals, Ch 2, EDC in same place, *SC in top of the next petal, EDC in next Sl St between petals, Ch 2, EDC in same place, repeat from * around, join with Sl St to first SC. Total – 16 EDC, 8 SC and 8 Ch-2 arches. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 5. Join Color A with standing SC to first SC of previous round, SC in next St, *Ch 1, working in front of Ch-2 arch, TR in same Sl St of Round 3 where two EDC from round 4 were made – place TR between those two EDC Sts, Ch 1, SC in each of next 3 Sts, repeat from * around, end with one SC, join with Sl St to first SC. Total – 8 TR and 24 SC. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 6. Join Color B with standing SC in any TR, *Ch 3, skip one SC, SC in next SC, Ch 3, skip one SC, SC in next TR, repeat from * around, end with skipping one SC, join with Sl St to first SC. Total – 16 SC and 16 Ch-3 arches. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 7. Note: when working in chain, insert hook under two loops of the chain. Join Color A with standing DC in 2nd (middle) Ch of any Ch-3 arch, (2 DC, Ch 1, 3 DC) in same Ch, SC in 2nd Ch of next Ch-3 arch, *(3 DC, Ch 1, 3 DC) in 2nd Ch of next arch, SC in 2nd Ch of next arch, repeat from * around, join with Sl St to first DC. Total – 8 scallops, 48 DC, 8 SC, 8 Ch-1 sps. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 8. Join Color B with standing SC in any Ch-1 sp at the top of the scallop, SC in same sp, (EDC, 4 HDC, EDC) in next SC between scallops, *2 SC in Ch-1 sp of next scallop, (EDC, 4 HDC, EDC) in next SC between scallops, repeat from * around, join with Sl St to FL of first SC. Mark BL of first SC with stitch marker. Total – 64 Sts.
Round 9. FLO entire round. *Ch 1, Sl St in FL of next St, repeat from * around, Ch 1, join with Sl St to same St as round started. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 10. BLO entire round. Join Color A with standing DC in marked BL of first SC of Round 8, 2 DC in next St, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, SC in each of next 8 Sts, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, *DC in next St, 2 DC in next St, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, SC in each of next 8 Sts, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, repeat from * around, join with Sl St to first DC. Total – 68 Sts.
Round 11. Ch 3, *(DC, Ch 2, DC) in next St, DC in next St, HDC in next St, SC in each of next 12 Sts, HDC in next St, DC in next St, repeat from * around, end with HDC in next St, join with Sl St to top of Ch 3 at the beginning. Total – 72 Sts and 4 Ch-2 corner sps. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 12. Join Color B with standing DC in any Ch-2 corner sp, (DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in same sp, DC in each St across to next corner, *(2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in Ch-2 corner sp, DC in each St across to next corner, repeat from * around, join with Sl St to first DC. Total – 88 DC and 4 Ch-2 corner sps. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 13. Note: In this round, you will need to crochet in spaces between stitches. To crochet in spaces, insert the hook between the indicated posts of the stitches instead of at the top of the stitches. Also, you need to count the posts instead of the tops of the stitches.
Join Color A with standing SC in any Ch-2 corner space, Ch 3, SC in same space, Ch 2, *skip next 2 Sts, SC in space before next St, Ch 2, repeat from * across to next corner, [(SC, Ch 3, SC) in next corner space, Ch 2, **skip next 2 Sts, SC in space before next St, Ch 2, repeat from ** across to next corner], repeat from [ to ] around. Join with Sl St to first SC. Total – 48 SC, 44 Ch-2 sps and 4 Ch-3 corner sps. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 14. Join Color B with standing DC in any Ch-3 corner space, (DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in same space, 2 DC in each Ch-2 space across to next corner, *(2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in corner, 2 DC in each Ch-2 space across to next corner, repeat from * around, join with Sl St to first DC. Total – 104 DC and 4 Ch-2 corner sps. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 15. Join Color A with standing DC in any Ch-2 corner sp, (DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in same sp, DC in each St across to next corner, *(2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in Ch-2 corner sp, DC in each St across to next corner, repeat from * around, join with Sl St to first DC. Total – 120 DC and 4 Ch-2 corner sps. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Round 16. Join Color B with standing HDC in any Ch-2 space, (HDC, Ch 2, 2 HDC) in same space, HDC in each St across to next corner, *(2 HDC, Ch 2, 2 HDC) in Ch-2 corner space, HDC in each St across to next corner, repeat from * around, join with Sl St to first HDC. Total – 136 HDC and 4 Ch-2 corner sps. Cut yarn and fasten off.
Finishing
Weave in all ends. Block your square to a proper shape.
