Finished Size:
This crochet Elephant applique is about 3 -1/4″ wide and 2-3/4″ tall.
Yarn:
- crochet light weight cotton size 3 (in my examples I used Aunt Lydia’s crochet cotton thread size 3 and Patons Grace light weight 3 cotton yarn)
- cotton crochet thread size 10
Hooks and Other Materials:
- crochet hook 1/2.75 mm
- crochet hook size 6/1.8 mm
- sticky back googly eyes or buttons
- black embroidery floss

Instructions:
For this crochet Elephant applique, you need to make a Head with a Trunk and two Ears.
I will show you two options to make this Elephant applique. In option 1 I used two different weight yarns. Crochet light weight 3 cotton doesn’t have many color choices. So, for the Ears, I used crochet cotton size 10, which has a large color pallet.
In option 2 – Elephant is made with one weight yarn.
Option 1. Elephant made with two different weight yarns
Materials I used: crochet light weight 3 cotton yarn for the Head, cotton crochet thread size 10 for the Ears, crochet hook 1/2.75 mm, crochet hook size 6/1.8 mm
Head with a Trunk
With crochet light weight 3 cotton yarn and hook 1/2.75 mm, Ch 4;

Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Rnd 2. Ch 3, HDC + DC in first St, 3 TR in next St, 2 DC in next St, HDC into each of next 3 Sts, HDC into Ch-1 stitch, Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point),
Ch 1, HDC into Ch-1 stitch, HDC into each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 TR in next St, DC + HDC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Rnd 3. Ch 3, SC in first St, 2 SC in each of next 4 Sts, SC in each of the next 6 Sts, SC in Ch-1 St, Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point);
making a Trunk – Ch 12, SC in 3rd Ch from the hook, SC in next Ch, 2 SC in next Ch, SC in each of next 7 Chs, Sl St into top of DC (see Note below);
SC in Ch-1 St, SC in each of the next 6 Sts, 2 SC in each of next 4 Sts, SC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Fasten off.
Note:
Working in top of a stitch – when instructed to work into the top of a stitch, insert hook under two loops highlighted in blue in direction of the arrow.
Ear – make 2 (see also instructions for the Large Size Heart)
With cotton crochet thread size 10 and hook 6/1.8 mm, Ch 4;
Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Rnd 2. Ch 3, HDC + DC in first St, 3 TR in next St, 2 DC in next St, HDC into each of next 3 Sts, HDC into Ch-1 stitch, Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point),
Ch 1, HDC into Ch-1 stitch, HDC into each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 TR in next St, DC + HDC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Rnd 3. Ch 3, SC in top of first St of previous Rnd, 2 SC in each of next 4 Sts, SC in each of the next 6 Sts, SC into Ch-1 St, Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point),

Option 2 – Elephant made with one weight yarn
Head with a Trunk
With crochet light weight 3 cotton yarn and hook 1/2.75 mm, make Head with a Trunk – follow the Instructions above.
Ear – make 2 (see also instructions for the Medium Size Heart)
With crochet light weight 3 cotton yarn and hook 1/2.75 mm, Ch 4;
Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches in fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Rnd 2. Ch 3, SC into first St, 2 SC into each of next 2 Sts, SC into each of next 3 Sts, SC into Ch-1 St, Ch 1, DC into next St (Heart point),
Ch 1, SC into Ch-1 St, SC into each of next 3 Sts, 2 SC into each of next 2 Sts, SC into next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Fasten off.
Finishing
Sew Ears to the Head. Block your applique as necessary.
Eyes
You have multiple options to make eyes. You can embroider them. You can also use buttons or googly eyes. (For babies and small children items – embroider the eyes on).

Did you mean 2 medium hearts for the elephant ears? On the pictures it looks like large for the head and medium for the ears!

Gina, I was using the same Large Heart pattern for the head and for the ears but different thread size and hooks. For the head – crochet cotton thread size 3 and hook 2.75 mm, for the ears – crochet cotton thread size 10 and hook 1.8 mm.
