Crochet Heart Lion Applique

This crochet heart Lion applique pattern is the next design in my heart-shaped appliques series. The face and the mane of this Lion applique are made from hearts.

This crochet Lion will make a cute embellishment for kid’s clothes, blankets, or hats. It is also would be perfect for a zoo themed nursery.

To make this Lion applique you need to crochet a large heart for the head, a lot of small hearts for the mane and then sew them together.

Abbreviations:

Ch – chain

DC – double crochet

HDC – half double crochet

Rnd – round

SC- single crochet

Sl St – slip stitch

St (Sts) – stitch (stitches)

TR – treble crochet

Finished Size: 

This crochet Lion applique is about 2-1/2” (6.5 cm) in diameter.

Materials:

• cotton crochet thread size 10, colors – yellow, orange
• crochet hook size 6/1.8 mm
• buttons of your choice for the Lion’s eyes
•  embroidery floss, color – black
•  embroidery needle
• sewing thread
• sewing needle

Instructions:

For this applique you need to make a Large Heart for the Lion’s head and eight Small Hearts for the Lion’s mane.

Large Heart

With yellow color, Ch 4;

Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1,  DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Rnd 2.  Ch 3, HDC + DC in first St, 3 TR in next St, 2 DC in next St, DC in each of next 3 Sts, HDC in Ch-1 St, Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point), Ch 1, HDC in Ch-1 St, DC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 TR in next St, DC + HDC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Rnd 3. Ch 3, HDC in first St, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in each of the next 5 Sts, HDC in Ch-1 St, Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point), Ch 1, HDC in Ch-1 St, HDC in each of the next 5 Sts, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center. Fasten off.

If you have a small hole in the center, close it while fastening off the beginning end.

Small Heart – make 8

With orange color, Ch 4;

Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC, Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Rnd 2. Ch 3, SC in first St, 2 SC in each of next 2 Sts, SC in each of next 3 Sts, SC in Ch-1 St, Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point), Ch 1, SC in Ch-1 St, SC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 SC in each of next 2 Sts, SC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center. Fasten off.

Finishing

Sew Small Hearts to the Large Heart from the back side slightly overlapping Small Hearts edges. Sew on buttons for the eyes. Embroider a mouth.
