This crochet Hedgehog is very cute, easy to make and could be used in many different ways. For Valentine’s Day, you can make a cool DIY Valentine’s Day card – attach this crochet Hedgehog and add the saying “Don’t “Hedgeitate”, Be My Valentine!”
You can use this crochet Hedgehog applique to embellish a baby blanket or picture frame. You could also use it for photo albums, scrapbooking, or a child’s room decor.

Hedgehogs are common in Ukraine where I grew up and I saw them in my childhood. They are very cute critters in spite of their spiky needles. I love hedgehogs and have a collection of hedgehogs made from different materials. You can see the photo at the end of this post. Ch – chain
DC – double crochet
DC3tog – double crochet 3 stitches together
HDC – half double crochet
Rnd – round
RS – right side
SC- single crochet
Sl St – slip stitch
St (Sts) – stitch (stitches)
WS – wrong side
Finished Size:
Crochet Hedgehog is about 2-1/2” (6.5 cm) long.
Materials:
- Patons Grace, cotton yarn (100% mercerized cotton; 136 yds/124 m per 1.7 oz/50 g skein), colors – A for the Body and B – for the Head
- Crochet hook 1/2.75 mm
- Embroidery floss
- Stitch marker

Instructions:
Body
With Color A:
Start with an adjustable ring.
Row 1. (RS) Ch 3 (counts as first DC), 6 DC in ring, draw the loop closed. To make it easier to do, first, untwist the tail. Then pull the tail to draw the loop closed tightly. Turn.
Row 2. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), DC in first St, 2 DC in each St to the end of the Row (last two DC work into the top of 3Ch at beginning of previous row). You should have made 14 DC total including 3Ch as first DC at the beginning. Turn.
Continue working in a Round. Rnd 3. Ch 3 (counts as first DC), **DC in next St, 2 DC in next St, repeat from ** 4 more times (you should have 3 Sts left), HDC in next St, 2 HDC in next, 3 SC in next St, mark last SC with stitch marker, SC in same St. Continue working along straight edge – SC into first row-end DC, 2 SC into next two row-end DC, SC into adjustable ring, 2 SC into each of next three row-end DC.
Row 4. Hedgehog’s spines. Ch 3, *SC in 2nd Ch and in 3rd Ch from the hook, Sl St in next two Sts of prev Rnd, repeat from * 7 more times – total 8 spines. Side facing you is RS.
Fasten off.
Head
With WS facing you, join Color B to marked St;
Row 1. Ch 1, SC in next St and in each of next 3 Sts – total 4 SC. Turn.
Row 2. Skip first St, DC3tog over next 3 Sts, Ch 1.
Fasten off.
Finishing
With black embroidery floss, embroider Hedgehog’s eye and nose. Block your applique as necessary.
You can add to your Hedgehog crochet Hearts.
Or, you can add crochet heart Balloon and small crochet Bow.
