These crochet patriotic earrings (or American flag earrings) will be a lovely accessory for the 4th of July celebration. I adapted a pattern I had previously designed for the patriotic heart ornament to make these earrings.

Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
DC – double crochet
SC- single crochet
Sl St – slip stitch
St (Sts) – stitch (stitches)
Level:
Intermediate.
Finished Size:
The earrings are about 1-1/4″ long.
Yarn:
- Aunt Lydia’s cotton crochet thread size #10, colors – Victory red, dark royal blue, and white
Hook and Other Materials:
- Crochet hook size 8/1.5 mm
- Bead needle
- Stitch marker
- Flat-nose pliers
- Earring hook – 2
- 10/0 white seed beads, or beads of your choice – 6
- Jump ring (4 mm) – 4
- Matching sewing thread
- Tapestry needle
- Sewing needle
- Spray starch

Notes:
- How to change to a new color: work the final stitch of the row with the first color, but do not complete the stitch. You will have 2 loops remain on the hook. Drop first color and draw through the loops on the hook new color and complete stitch.
- Beginning Ch 1 doesn’t count as a St.

With red color:
Ch 4 (Ch 1 and Ch 3 as first DC),
Row 1. Working under 2 loops, 4 DC in 4th Ch from hook. Total – 5 DC. Turn.
Row 2. Ch 1, SC in each St across, change color to white (see Note). Cut off red. Total – 5 SC. Turn.
Row 3. Ch 3 (counts as DC), DC in first St, DC in next, 3 DC in next, DC in next, 2 DC in last. Total – 9 DC. Turn.
Row 4. Ch 1, SC in each St across, change color to blue (see Note), cut off white. Total – 9 SC. Turn.
Next, we will be make two separate top shell parts. Continue working with blue color.
Blue Shell
Row 1. Ch 1, SC in first and in each of next 3 Sts, SC in next St (this is middle St of Row 4 – mark this St with stitch marker, we will need it later). Total – 5 SC. Turn.
Row 2. Skip two Sts, 5 DC in next, skip one St, Sl St in next St. Turn.
Row 3. Ch 1, SC in top of first DC of the shell, 2 SC in each of next 3 DC, SC in next DC, Sl St in marked middle St of Row 4. Cut off blue.
Red Shell
Draw red color through marked St of Row 4,
Row 1. Ch 1, SC in same St and in each of next 4 Sts, total – 5 SC. Turn.
Row 2. Skip two Sts, 5 DC in next St, skip one St, Sl St in next. Turn.
Row 3. Ch 1, SC in first DC of the shell, 2 SC in each of next 3 DC, SC in next St, Sl St in first St of last white Row. Fasten off.
Finishing
Weave in all ends.
Place hearts with the right side facing you (the blue shell should be on the left side), and then sew beads onto the blue shell to represent stars. You can also embroider the dots instead.
Stiffen the hearts.
Assembling:
Use flat-nosed pliers to open and close jump rings.
With heart right side facing you, open the first jump ring and slip it under two strands on the top of the red shell. Close the jump ring.
Next, open the next jump ring and add it to the first one. While the jump ring is open, slip the earring hook onto it, and then close it.
