Crochet Thanksgiving Turkey Heart Ornament

Abbreviations:

Ch – chain

DC – double crochet

HDC – half double crochet

This turkey ornament is about 4.5” (11.5 cm) without a hanging loop

Yarn: For the heart:

• Medium weight #4 yarn, two strands held together, color – cream (I used medium weight #4 Caron One Pound 100% acrylic yarn)
• Medium weight #4 yarn, one strand, color – orange (I used medium weight #4 Red Heart Super Saver 100% acrylic yarn)

For the turkey:

• Medium weight #4 yarn, colors – brown, yellow, orange (I used medium weight #4 Red Heart Super Saver 100% acrylic yarn)
• Light weight #3 yarn or crochet thread #3, color – red (I used Patons Grace light weight #3 100% cotton yarn)

Hooks and other materials:

• Crochet hook size J-10/6 mm
• Crochet hook size 7/4.5 mm
• Crochet hook C/2.75 mm
• Sewing needle
• Sewing thread
• Yarn needle
• Googly eyes
• Turkey decorative button

Instructions:

To make this crochet turkey ornament, we will need to crochet a heart for the base and a turkey applique.  Then, we will sew the turkey onto the heart and embellish the heart with decorative button.

Heart

With two strands of medium-weight #4 yarn held together in cream and crochet hook size J-10/6 mm, make magic ring;

Round 1. Ch 3, make all of the next stitches into the ring – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in ring. Tighten the ring, but do not close it completely.

Round 2.  Ch 3, (HDC, DC) in first St, 3 TR in next St, 2 DC in next St, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, HDC in Ch-1, (HDC, DC, HDC) in next St (Heart point), HDC in Ch-1, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 TR in next St, (DC, HDC) in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Round 3. Ch 3, HDC in first St, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in each of the next 6 Sts, (HDC, DC, HDC) in next St (Heart point), HDC in each of the next 6 Sts, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in next St, Ch 4, Sl St in center. Cut off the yarn leaving 7-8” tail. Fasten off. Close and secure the magic ring.

Round 4. Use one strand of medium weight #4 yarn in orange color and crochet hook size J-10/6 mm. Join yarn into last Sl St of previous Rnd; Ch 1, Sl St in 2^nd Ch of Ch 3 at the beginning of previous Rnd, Ch 1, Sl St in next Ch, *Ch 1, Sl St in next St, repeat from * around to Ch 4 at the end of previous Rnd, Ch 1, Sl St in 1^st Ch, [Ch 1, Sl St in next Ch] twice, Ch 1, Sl St into same place as you join.  Fasten off.

Finishing

Using a sewing needle and matching thread, sew the turkey applique onto the heart base.  
Sew the turkey button onto the heart. Alternatively, you can use a hot glue gun to attach the applique and button to the heart.
Make a hanging loop by using two yarn ends in cream color.
