This adorable Seal Playing with a Ball crochet applique is made of crocheted hearts, making it a cute addition to my collection of heart-shaped appliques. The Seal’s body, tail, and flippers are created from hearts of various sizes.
Creating this heart-shaped seal applique is easy. You just need to crochet hearts and stitch them together.

Abbreviations:
- Ch – chain
- DC – double crochet
- Rnd – round
- SC- single crochet
- Sl St – slip stitch
- St (Sts) – stitch (stitches)
Finished Size:
This crochet Seal applique is about 2-1/4″ wide and 3-1/4″ tall (including a ball).
Materials I used:
- cotton crochet thread size 3, color – lime
- cotton crochet thread size 3, color – warm rose
- cotton crochet thread size 3, color – black
- cotton crochet thread size 10, color – green
- crochet hook 1/2.75 mm
- crochet hook size 6/1.8 mm
Instructions:
1. With cotton crochet thread size 3, color – olive green, and hook 1/2.75 mm make large size heart for the Seal’s Body (see also instructions for the Crochet Hearts in 3 Sizes).
Large Heart
Ch 4;
Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St.
Rnd 2. Ch 3, in top of first St of previous Rnd make HDC and DC, 3 TR in next St, 2 DC in next St, HDC into each of next 3 Sts, HDC into Ch-1 stitch, Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point), Ch 1, HDC into Ch-1 stitch, HDC into each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 TR in next St, DC and HDC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.
Rnd 3. Ch 3, SC in top of first St of previous Rnd, 2 SC in each of next 4 Sts, then SC in each of the next 7 Sts, Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point), Ch 1, SC in each of the next 7 Sts, 2 SC in each of next 4 Sts, SC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
2. With cotton crochet thread size 10, color – green, and hook 6/1.8 mm make three small size hearts for the Tail and Flippers (see also instructions for the Crochet Hearts in 3 Sizes).
Small Heart
Ch 4;
Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC, Ch 3, Sl St, Ch 1.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
3. Make a Nose:
With black cotton crochet thread size 3 and hook 1/2.75 mm,
Sl St to join to the side of the heart, Ch 3, DC, Sl St into same stitch.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
5. With black cotton thread size 3, make 2-3 stitches for the eye or you can use a bead of your choice instead.
6. Using sewing needle and matching sewing thread, sew hearts together.
7. Crochet a Ball
With pink cotton crochet thread size 3 and hook 1/2.75 mm make an adjustable ring,
Rnd 1. Ch 3, 12 DC into ring. Draw the loop closed. Join with Sl St in top of Ch 3.
Rnd 2. Ch 1, *SC into next St, 2 SC into next St*, repeat from * to * around; join with Sl St.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
