Crochet Valentine Hedgehog Heart Ornament

Abbreviations:

Ch – chain

DC – double crochet

HDC – half double crochet

SC – single crochet

Sl St – slip stitch

St (Sts) – stitch (stitches)

TR – treble crochet

Finished size:

The heart is about 4.5” (11.5 cm) without a hanging loop

Yarn: For the heart:

• Medium weight #4 yarn, two strands held together, color – white (I used Red Heart Super Saver, medium weight #4 yarn )
• Medium weight #4 yarn, one strand, color – pale pink (I used Red Heart Super Saver, medium weight #4 yarn)

For the hedgehog:

• Light weight #3 yarn or crochet thread #3, colors  – pink, neutral (I used Patons Grace light weight #3 yarn)

Hooks and other materials:

• Crochet hook size J-10/6 mm
• Steel crochet hook 1/2.75 mm
• Sewing needle
• Matching sewing threads
• Black embroidery floss
• Embroidery needle
• Yarn needle
• Heart buttons: 3 larger red buttons and 15 small pink buttons

Instructions:

To make this ornament, we will need to crochet a heart for the base and a hedgehog applique.  Then, we will sew the hedgehog onto the heart and embellish the ornament with heart buttons.

Heart – base

With two strands of medium weight #4 yarn held together in white and crochet hook size J-10/6 mm, make magic ring;

Round 1. Ch 3, make all of the next stitches into the ring – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in ring. Tighten the ring, but do not close it completely.

Round 2.  Ch 3, (HDC, DC) in first St, 3 TR in next St, 2 DC in next St, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, HDC in Ch-1, (HDC, DC, HDC) in next St (Heart point), HDC in Ch-1, HDC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC in next St, 3 TR in next St, (DC, HDC) in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Round 3. Ch 3, HDC in first St, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in each of the next 6 Sts, (HDC, DC, HDC) in next St (Heart point), HDC in each of the next 6 Sts, 2 HDC in each of next 5 Sts, HDC in next St, Ch 4, Sl St in center. Cut off the yarn. Fasten off. Close and secure the magic ring.

Round 4. Use one strand of medium weight #4 yarn in pink color and crochet hook size J-10/6 mm.
Leaving a long tail, join yarn into last Sl St of previous round; Ch 1, Sl St in 2^nd Ch of Ch 3 at the beginning of previous round, Ch 1, Sl St in next Ch, *Ch 1, Sl St in next St, repeat from * around to Ch 4 at the end of previous round, Ch 1, Sl St in 1^st Ch, [Ch 1, Sl St in next Ch] twice, Ch 1, Sl St into same place as you join. Fasten off. Leave long tail for making a hanging loop.

Hedgehog

Use light-weight #3 yarn in pink and a steel crochet hook 1/2.75 mm. Instructions are posted here: crochet pattern hedgehog applique.

Finishing

Using a sewing needle and matching thread, sew the hedgehog applique onto the heart base.  Sew the larger heart buttons onto the back of the hedgehog.
Sew small buttons around the heart’s edge. Alternatively, you can use a hot glue gun to attach the applique and buttons to the heart.

Make a hanging loop by using two yarn ends in pink color.
